NEW YEAR BRINGS GREAT RESULT FOR WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL AT ADIDAS CUP
The Adidas Cup assembles some of the top CCAA women’s volleyball teams in the country. Hosted in Oshawa, Ontario, 2012 was CMU’s second trip to the showcase tournament and like a year ago, the Blazers displayed to Ontario and the CCAA that they will compete on a national stage.
2011 ended in the semi-finals for the Blazers, capped by a disappointing playoff loss to Niagara College. In an epic round-robin rematch, CMU and the Knights served-up a match that was the highlight of the 2012 round-robin, with the Manitobans triumphing in straight-sets 32-30, 25-21.
Brimming with confidence, the Blazers went through the rest of their Pool B competition, taking straight-set wins against Canadore, Sheridan and Loyalist and drawing with the host Durham Lords on way to the tournament semis. Pool A featured two dominant CCAA programs. The #5 ranked Humber Hawks who breezed through their round-robin matches and #13 ranked Cambrian who finished in second-place to become CMU’s semi-final playoff opponent.
Trailing to Cambrian 2-0 in the best-of-five semi, the Blazers surged back winning the third and fourth set (25-16, 25-17) only to suffer a heart-breaking tiebreak loss 15-12 to be left out of the Cup Final for the second year in a row.
Humber ended up defeating Cambrian in the Gold Medal match to capture their fourth-consecutive Adidas Cup. Fifth-year captain Evelyn Kampen was selected to the all-tournament team. The next action for the Blazers is Saturday when they travel to Brandon for a two-match series with the Assiniboine Cougars.
BLAZERS BOUNCE BEMIDJI CROSSOVER TOURNAMENT
The CMU men’s and women’s basketball teams were in Minnesota to start the second-semester competing at the 2nd annual NIAC-MCAC Crossover Tournament. The women lost their first game to Turtle Mountain Community College 89-64, led by Laura Tait with 12 points and 9 rebounds, and were subsequently eliminated from the consolation-side by the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen on Saturday afternoon 71-49. Carrera Lamoureux scored 16 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in the loss, but was rewarded with an all-tournament selection.
The CMU men tipped-off with Trinity Bible College in their first game of the tournament and were edged 73-70 despite Nick Miller’s 25 point, 6 rebound performance. In game 2, the Blazers triumphed over Turtle Mountain 90-83 and on Matt Koenig’s 20-points and 4 of 6 shooting from beyond the 3-point line. CMU faced Brandon’s Assiniboine Community College in Sunday’s consolation final and beat the Cougars 80-66, led by Wyatt Anders 14 rebounds and 7 points, to finish the tournament with 2 wins and a loss.
Wyatt Anders and Nick Miller were both selected as tournament all-stars for the Blazers. The next home action for the CMU basketball teams is this Friday night when they host Red River College at 6 and 8 PM.
