BLAZERS ARE TOO HOT TO HANDLE
The CMU women’s volleyball team kept their perfect MCAC season intact in a straight-set victory over second place Red River College on Saturday night, winning by scores of 25-15, 26-24, 25-19. Without the services of setter Kathleen Vitt, the 8-0 Blazers were led by first-year Kristy Hugill who again showed herself to be a very capable in her ability to distribute. Dara Friesen and Evelyn Kampen received the majority of Hugill’s sets were were both extremely efficient in their attacks. Kampen led the Blazers with 12 kills on 13 attempts and Friesen finished with 9 kills on 16 attempts and added a block. The Blazers found themselves in an unfamiliar situation in the second set. Head coach Andrea Charbonneau was twice forced to call timeouts at 3-8 and 22-23, as the Rebels had CMU on the ropes. The experienced attacking of Friesen and Kampen along with consistent serving eventually allowed CMU middle Breanne Giesbrecht to serve for the set, which she finished emphatically with an ace. Giesbrecht finished with 3 kills and 2 stuff blocks to lead CMU in the category for the match. For the Rebels, Carley Dupuis finished with 6 kills while Jesse Arnason picked up 4 blocks. BLAZERS WIN EXHIBITION SERIES WITH PROVIDENCE
After split home games in their first two matches, the CMU women’s volleyball team went into Providence and beat the Lady Freemen 3 – 0 on Friday night to clinch the exhibition series. “It was a huge game for us,” raved CMU coach Andrea Charbonneau, “I was incredibly proud of the girls and what they have already achieved in our first month of the season.”
Providence took first blood in the series winning in 5 sets back on September 25th. CMU would even things the following weekend, winning on home court 3 – 1. The Jubilee Gymnasium on the Providence campus was alive with expectation for the final meeting of the season between the provincial rivals and witnessed CMU emerge as the victor, riding Dara Friesen’s 24 kill performance. Friesen paced the Blazers to a 25-22 first set lead and when things went pear mid-way through the second set, her consistent attacking brought the Blazers out on top.
Trailing 18-12 in the second set, Charbonneau adjusted the lineup by entering first-year setter Kristy Hugill into the match. Hugill would continue to make use of Friesen’s attacking that hadn’t cooled off since the first set, leading CMU back to a 26-24 second set win. This combined with the defensive presence of Maraleigh Short, herself recording 11 digs on the night kept plays alive for CMU and allow Hugill to be effective in distributing the attacks.
The Blazers would go on to win the third set in another close scoreline 25-23 to take the match. Friesen ended with 24 kills to only 3 errors, while Evelyn Kampen added 11 kills for the winners. CMU will host Assiniboine Community College in women’s volleyball on Saturday afternoon with matches taking place at 11am and 2pm. King’s would pose a significant threat to CMU in Sunday’s semi with the Blazers claiming a five set victory by scores of 15-25, 25-17, 25-20, 9-25, and 15-12. “We started slow this morning, but made a big change to our lineup in the second set that helped us win the match”, explained CMU coach Andrea Charbonneau, speaking of the substitution that introduced first-year Kristy Hugill as the setter and moved starting setter, Kathleen Vitt to back row to play libero. The switch improved CMU’s passing and helped the Blazers win the exciting five set match.
