| Cheryl Pauls is Associate Professor of Piano and Music Theory at Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she has been teaching in the classroom and piano studio since 1994. Since 2008 Cheryl also has served as Campus Chair of CMU’s Shaftesbury Campus. Cheryl is well-established as a piano soloist, collaborating musician and lecture recitalist, performing in a wide range of traditional and contemporary styles. Cheryl is known particularly for her contributions to new music, which have been acclaimed both locally and nationally through concerts and CBC Radio broadcasts. This spring Cheryl is guest curator and pianist for a GroundSwell concert celebrating the music of John Cage. She also will be recording the recent piano music of Elliott Carter; this involves a collection of delightful short pieces that he wrote between the ages of 85 and 100. Cheryl’s research and writing projects seek to interface studies in music theory and performance with those in memory, physiology, liturgy and cultural expression. Her recent publications include two essays that engage the use of musical metaphors within theological studies, “Harmony in Exile: Rest in its Embers,” in The Gift of Difference: Radical Orthodoxy, Radical Reformation, Chris K. Huebner and Tripp York, eds., and “Strains in the Voice of the Church Made Strange,” in The Church Made Strange for the Nations: Essays in Ecclesiology and Political Theology (Festschrift in honour of Harry Huebner), Paul Doerksen and Karl Koop, eds. Cheryl enjoys collaborating with her husband, Bryan Harder—and occasionally also their sons, Nicholas and William—in producing multi-media liturgical presentations for worship gatherings. Cheryl holds a doctorate in piano performance from the University of British Columbia where she studied piano with Jane Coop, Douglas Finch and Robert Silverman, and theory with John Roeder. Prior to that she completed an M.Mus. degree at UBC, a B.Mus. at University of Manitoba, a BA from University of Winnipeg, and a Bachelor of Religious Studies from one of CMU’s predecessor colleges, Mennonite Brethren Bible College. Cheryl is actively involved in leading music and worship at her home congregation, River East Mennonite Brethren Church in Winnipeg. In February 2012 Cheryl was appointed President Elect of Canadian Mennonite University. She will begin this position on November 1, 2012. |
