Menno Simons College Social Justice Fair Explores Women’s Justice Issues

Students of Menno Simons College (MSC), Canadian Mennonite University (CMU), and The University of Winnipeg (UWinnipeg) gather for MSC’s Social Justice Fair 2010 on Wednesday, February 10 to explore issues surrounding women and justice.  The Fair will run from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the University of Winnipeg’s Duckworth Lounge.

“The Justice Fair offers a valuable opportunity for students and community members to learn about and potentially make connections with social justice-related organizations in Winnipeg,” says Caitlin Eliasson, co-coordinator for the event. This year’s Fair features display booths from a number of social justice organizations representing issues such as women’s empowerment, human rights, restorative justice, sustainability, and development, adds Eliasson.

Attendees are invited to a panel discussion on the topic of war’s unique impact on women (11:30 a.m.), followed by presentations on First Nations women’s access to justice (Nahanni Fontaine, 12:30 p.m.) and whether there are limits to Canada’s “responsibility to protect” (Marilou McPhedran, 1:30 p.m.).

“The Social Justice Fair creates space for individuals to raise their consciousness about women’s marginalization and discuss possible solutions to oppression,” says Kristin Sheffield, co-coordinator with Eliasson.

Menno Simons College strives to foster a learning community that prepares students from diverse backgrounds for participation and leadership in local and global communities in the areas of faith, peace, and justice.

“The Social Justice Fair is ultimately an indication of MSC’s commitment to providing both theoretical and practical learning for students,” affirms Eliasson.
