Why complete a B.A. with a major in English?
Both the three-year and the four-year Bachelor of Arts with a major in English provide a breadth of exposure to the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. These degrees prepare students well for any area of employment or vocation with valuable skills—communication, writing, analytical, critical thinking, and organizing. A three- or a four-year B.A. in English also serves as a sound basis for launching into professional studies such as education, social work, law, and so on.
Why complete a four-year rather than a three-year degree?
If you complete a major in English within the four-year B.A., you will gain the advantage of at least six more courses in English than if you were to complete the three-year B.A. This would give you room to include more of the tantalizing upper-level offerings, such as:
- ENGL-3000 History of the Book
- ENGL-3090 Medieval Literature
- ENGL-4200 Revenge
- ENGL-3950 or 4950 Topics in English (The topics of these courses very from year to year. Recent offerings have included Impossible Books, Detectives in Fiction and Film, and Tolkien)
Further, the four-year B.A. in English can provide the basis from which to apply for admission to M.A. programs in English. The four-year degree is becoming the standard undergraduate expectation across North America.
Why choose a minor in English?
If you choose a minor in English, you will have opportunity to explore a variety of genres and styles from Old English literature to contemporary literature. This minor is an attractive complement to any major, from Communications and Media to Mathematics to Psychology.
