Why study Languages at CMU?
Several programs at CMU require that students take at least six credit hours in a language other than English. Programs in History and International Development Studies require facility in a second language in order to enhance research and/or facilitate strong relationships in the field of study. . Furthermore, students may take up to 12 credit hours of French, German, and Spanish at CMU in order to fulfill the teachable minor requirement for Early and Middle Years(in this case, students will go on to complete an after-degree B.Ed. at another university).

Why complete a minor in French at CMU?
The minor requires only 18 credit hours and can fit alongside a major in any field, whether in the three-year or the four-year Bachelor of Arts. Students may take up to twelve credit hours of their minor in French at CMU, and will complete the remaining credit hours at another university. Taking a minor in French at CMU is a valuable complement to any degree, but is especially helpful alongside the major in English, International Development Studies, History, Political Studies, and the Social Science major with a concentration in Intercultural Studies or Disaster Recovery Studies.

Students may take up to twelve credit hours of their minor in Spanish at CMU, and will complete the remaining credit hours at another university. Taking a minor in Spanish at CMU is a valuable complement to any degree, but is especially helpful alongside the major in International Development Studies, History, Peace & Conflict Transformation Studies, Political Studies, and the Social Science major with a concentration in Intercultural Studies or Disaster Recovery Studies.

LANG-1010/3 Beginning French I: A study of the fundamental structures of French with oral and written practice. For students with no prior knowledge of French, or who have studied French up to and including Grade 11 or its equivalent. Students with Grade 12 French or its equivalent may not normally take this course for credit.
LANG-1020/3 Beginning French II: A continuation of the study of the fundamental structures of French with oral and written practice. Prerequisite: LANG-1010/3.
LANG-1110/3 Beginning German I: A study of the fundamental structures of German with oral and written practice. For students with no prior knowledge of German, or who have studied German up to and including Grade 11 or its equivalent. Students with Grade 12 German or its equivalent may not normally take this course for credit.
LANG-1120/3 Beginning German II: A continuation of the study of the fundamental structures of German with oral and written practice. Prerequisite: LANG-1110/3.
LANG-1200/6 Beginning Spanish: A study of the fundamental structures of Spanish with oral and written practice. For students with no prior knowledge of Spanish, or who have studied Spanish up to and including Grade 11 or its equivalent. Students with Grade 12 Spanish or its equivalent may not normally take this course for credit.This course is available only through CMU’s Outtatown Program, Guatemala sites only.
May not be held for credit together with the LANG-1210 and LANG-1220.
LANG-1210/3 Beginning Spanish I: A study of the fundamental structures of Spanish with oral and written practice. For students with no prior knowledge of Spanish, or who have studied Spanish up to and including Grade 11 or its equivalent. Students with Grade 12 Spanish or its equivalent may not normally take this course for credit. May not be held for credit together with the LANG-1200.
LANG-1220/3 Beginning Spanish II: A continuation of the study of the fundamental structures of Spanish with oral and written practice. Prerequisite: LANG-1210/3. May not be held for credit together with the LANG-1200.
LANG-2010/3 Intermediate French I: Language study and practice in the classroom and language laboratory, and readings in French and French-Canadian culture. Prerequisite: Senior matriculation French or LANG-1020/3. Not suitable for students who have completed a Grade 12 French Immersion program.
LANG-2020/3 Intermediate French II: A continuation of language study and practice in the classroom and language laboratory, and readings in French and French-Canadian culture. Prerequisite: LANG-2010/3.
LANG-2110/3 Intermediate German I: Language study and practice in the classroom and language laboratory, and readings in German culture. Prerequisite: Senior matriculation German or LANG-1120/3.
LANG-2120/3 Intermediate German II: A continuation of language study and practice in the classroom and language laboratory, and readings in German culture. Prerequisite: LANG- 2110/3.
LANG-2210/3 Intermediate Spanish I: Language study and practice in the classroom and language laboratory, and readings in Spanish culture. Prerequisite: Senior matriculation Spanish or LANG-1220/3.
LANG-2220/3 Intermediate Spanish II: A continuation of language study and practice in the classroom and language laboratory, and readings in Spanish culture. Prerequisite: LANG- 2210/3.
LANG-2310/3 Elementary Biblical Hebrew I: This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of biblical Hebrew grammar and vocabulary. Selected prose texts in the Hebrew Bible will be read and translated.
LANG-2320/3 Elementary Biblical Hebrew II: A continuation of the fundamentals of biblical Hebrew grammar and vocabulary. Selected prose texts in the Hebrew Bible will be read and translated. Prerequisite: LANG-2310/3.
LANG-2410/3 Elementary Biblical Greek I: This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of Koine Greek grammar and vocabulary. Selected prose texts in the New Testament will be read and translated.
LANG-2420/3 Elementary Biblical Greek II: A continuation of the fundamentals of Koine Greek grammar and vocabulary. Selected prose texts in the New Testament will be read and translated. Prerequisite: LANG-2410/3.
