Why does CMU require Biblical and Theological Studies within its Core Curriculum?
CMU is a Christian university, founded by and owned by Mennonite churches. The Biblical and Theological Studies (BTS) requirement within CMU’s Core Curriculum reflects CMU’s identity as a Christian university. Through course work in BTS, students gain a foundational grasp of the story, language, and content of the Christian faith.
Why choose a minor in Biblical and Theological Studies?
The eighteen-credit-hour BTS requirement within CMU’s Core Curriculum makes up a minor in BTS for any B.A. program, as long as no courses used to meet the Core Curriculum requirement are also counted toward the requirements of a major or of a second minor. A minor in BTS is an attractive complement to any major, from Communications and Media to Mathematics to Psychology.
Why complete a B.A. with a major in Biblical and Theological Studies?
Both the three-year and the four-year Bachelor of Arts with a major in BTS provide a breadth of exposure to the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, and significant depth in Biblical and Theological Studies. These degrees prepare students well for any area of employment or vocation with valuable skills—communication, writing, analytical, critical thinking, and organizing. A three- or a four-year B.A. in BTS also serves as a sound basis for launching into professional studies such as social work, law, and so on.
Why complete a four-year rather than a three-year degree?
If you complete a major in BTS within the four-year B.A., you will gain the advantage of at least six more courses in BTS than if you were to complete the three-year B.A. This will give you room to include more of the tantalizing upper-level offerings, such as:
BTS-3220 Apocalypse—Then and Now
BTS-3450 Theologies of Power
BTS-4180 Jews and Christians and Greco-Roman Society
BTS-3950 or 4950 Topics in BTS (The topics of these courses very from year to year. Recent offerings have included Dante’s Divine Comedy, Theologies of the Reformations, and North American Evangelicalism)
If you complete the four-year B.A. (Honours) you will also have the opportunity to write a thesis.
The four-year B.A. in BTS offers both a General stream and a Ministry Arts stream. The Ministry Arts stream offers concentrations in Missions and Service, Worship, Youth Ministry, and also a general concentration in which a student may choose courses of particular relevance to her or his sense of calling.
The four-year B.A. in BTS affords significantly more space for general electives than the three-year B.A. This means that you can readily include a minor or even a second major in a field of interest to you.
The four-year B.A. in BTS can provide the basis from which to apply for admission to Master of Arts programs in BTS or to a Master of Divinity program. The four-year degree is becoming the standard undergraduate expectation across Canada and the USA.
Why choose a Certificate in Biblical and Theological Studies or a Certificate in Anabaptist Studies?
The certificate programs are an advantage to students who have only a short time frame available for studies (e.g., one or two years), or to students who can only complete one or two courses per year over a period of years. Students may also choose a certificate program as a short-term objective, after the completion of which they may decide on a longer-term objective such as a three- or four-year B.A. Certificate programs in BTS or in Anabaptist Studies will ground students in the Biblical/Christian story, which has power to shape their character, thought, and action in preparation for any vocation.
