Why Major in Interdisciplinary Studies
If you are a student with many different interests, choosing a major can feel difficult, if not impossible. The Interdisciplinary Studies major allows you the freedom to develop a program of study that is oriented around your particular interests and professional goals. To develop a program of study, you will identify a central question that you are excited and curious about. How do environmental changes impact human migration? How does our use of technology impact our mental health? How does music help us to communicate with one another?
Once you have defined your question, you will work closely with faculty advisors to combine CMU's course options in creative ways. For example, you may draw together courses in History, International Development Studies, and Political Studies. Or, you could combine Music and Communications and Media Studies. The options are endless!
Students apply to the Interdisciplinary Studies major at the beginning of their third year. In the first two years, students take a range of courses in areas of interest. The final two years of study are structured around the student's orienting question. The interdisciplinary studies major includes three variations, including the possibility of an Honours degree (culminating in a thesis) and a Combined major, which focuses on two main areas of study.
