Mathematics

Why CMU?

Because mathematics is the foundation of science and technology, it has tremendous potential, for good and for ill. The same mathematical training can be used to combat epidemics or to build "better" war machines. Our world needs more theologically informed mathematicians, and more mathematically informed theologians.

At CMU, a Christian worldview provides perspective on mathematical studies. We consider limitations and ethical applications of mathematics, how math can inspire awe of the Creator, and how it has informed self-understanding and theology. For example, think about how theological Einstein’s words on math and science are: “The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible.”

But theological interplay is just one side of CMU's interdisciplinary approach. If you choose to study here, you will graduate with the ability to think, speak and write intelligently about the intersections between math and numerous other disciplines including politics, science, and art.
