{"id":1249,"date":"2011-03-30T13:59:58","date_gmt":"2011-03-30T18:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/?p=1249"},"modified":"2011-03-30T15:20:32","modified_gmt":"2011-03-30T20:20:32","slug":"msc-students-recognized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/2011\/msc-students-recognized\/","title":{"rendered":"MSC students recognized for Making a Difference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two Menno Simons College (MSC) students have been recognized for their part in making the world a better place.<span style=\"color: #1f497d;\"> <\/span>During International Development Week, which had as its theme \u201cI am Making a Difference,\u201d the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) named eight youth as Young Global Citizens, including MSC\u2019s Tyler Morden of Morden, MB and Zoe Gross from Barisford, MB.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very pleased to see these students being recognized for their efforts by MCIC for giving their time and energy in ways that promote international cooperation,\u201d says MSC Dean Richard McCutcheon.<\/p>\n<p>In recognizing these students, MCIC conducted video interviews in which Morden and Gross reflected on how they are contributing in positive ways in their communities and abroad.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1251\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1251\" style=\"width: 366px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1251\" title=\"Tyler Morden\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/0026-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"Tyler Morden\" width=\"366\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/0026-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/0026-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tyler Morden<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Morden, who works for the <strong>Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba<\/strong> (IRCOM), believes that international work is important, even if it is in one\u2019s own city and country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am making a difference through the work I do supporting newcomer children and youth with their settlement in Winnipeg,\u201d says Morden in his video interview. \u201cThere are a lot of challenges and barriers that face [the children and youth that I work with]; anything from language barriers to learning our laws and customs, and the work that I do is to help children and youth learn these things so they can be active members of our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Gross, spending eight months in Kenya working with a national women\u2019s organization helped her learn that women\u2019s concerns in Kenya are similar to concerns of women in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to work together and support one another in these endeavours,\u201d says Gross.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1260\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1260\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1260\" title=\"zoegross\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/zoegross-300x157.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/zoegross-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/zoegross.jpg 591w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1260\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zoe Gross<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gross believes that international development is important because the world is so interconnected, and many don\u2019t recognize this.<br \/>\n\u201cOne of the things that people don\u2019t realize about international development\u2026 is that the issues are really intimately connected. \u00a0Just because you are working in the inner city of Winnipeg doesn\u2019t mean those issues are any different than the slums or ghettos of Nairobi, for example,\u201d Gross says.<\/p>\n<p>Along with Morden and Gross, MCIV recognized six other Manitobans for the work that they are doing, helping to demonstrate how everyone has the potential to contribute.<\/p>\n<p>To view MCIC videos of MSC students, visit:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/mcic.ca\/makingadifference\/video\/tyler-morden\">http:\/\/mcic.ca\/makingadifference\/video\/tyler-morden<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/mcic.ca\/makingadifference\/video\/zoe-gross\/\">http:\/\/mcic.ca\/makingadifference\/video\/zoe-gross\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>MSC provides education flowing from Anabaptist Mennonite understandings of faith, peace, and justice while engaging other religious traditions and intellectual perspectives.
