{"id":1915,"date":"2011-08-31T16:48:44","date_gmt":"2011-08-31T21:48:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/?p=1915"},"modified":"2011-08-31T16:59:50","modified_gmt":"2011-08-31T21:59:50","slug":"plans-for-fall-festival-2011announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/2011\/plans-for-fall-festival-2011announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Plans for Fall Festival 2011 Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Exciting Weekend of Activities Slated for September 30 to October 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CMU invites the public to experience two exciting days on campus and get a taste of university life during its Fall Festival 2011, being held September 30 and October 1 at 500 Shaftesbury Boulevard, Winnipeg.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1916\" title=\"menno cross\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"612\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/image002.jpg 612w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/image002-300x123.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFall Festival \u2013 replacing CMU\u2019s traditional Homecoming \u2013 affords a wonderful opportunity to connect with our university community and participate in variety of exciting events.\u00a0 Come, visit our campus, experience our faculty in action, glimpse the vibrant student life at CMU, and share in the program, vision, and potential of our university,\u201d says Vice President External Terry Schellenberg.\u00a0 \u201cEveryone \u2013 students, alumni, friends, donors, community members &#8211; is welcome to be part of a renewed weekend that will connect and inspire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The weekend opens Friday with a celebration to honour CMU\u2019s 2011 Blazer Distinguished Community Service Award winner Ray Dirks along with winners of the 2011 Blazer Distinguished Alumni awards, Lois Coleman Neufeld (MBBC \u201980), Judith Klassen Neufeld (CMBC \u201997), David Loewen (MBBC \u201961), and Robert Wedel (CMBC \u201969).<\/p>\n<p>Following the award presentations, guests gather at 7:30 p.m. to explore the issue of human rights in an evening presentation of words and music.\u00a0 CMU offers a thought-provoking lecture for the public, entitled \u201cIt\u2019s Not Only about You\u201d by faculty member Paul Doerksen, followed by a response from faculty member John Derksen. Woven into the presentation will be music of the Quartet for the End of Time, by Olivier Messiaen.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors with an interest in athletics can watch the exhibition volleyball games in the Loewen Athletic Centre from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Activities on Saturday get underway with the challenging MennoCross bike races, 11 to 5 pm. Racers ride a course that twists and turns around CMU\u2019s north campus.\u00a0 In addition to the competitive class, there are races for beginner and intermediate riders as well as kids. Registration details are available online.<\/p>\n<p>Alumni reunions take place in the afternoon, as well as an alumni choir rehearsal for the evening performances.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning at 3 p.m., a variety of activities get underway, with games, a children\u2019s \u201cbouncy house,\u201d dunk tank, and a pie auction included in the festival\u2019s offerings.\u00a0 Visitors \u2013 and especially parents of students \u2013 may be interested in taking tours of CMU\u2019s student residences and campus buildings and grounds.<\/p>\n<p>Of particular interest to guests, from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., will be the presentation of five short \u201cFaculty Samplers\u201d in two time slots.\u00a0 The \u201csamplers\u201d will offer a taste of the passion and expertise of CMU\u2019s faculty. Dietrich Bartel presents Music as Wellness; Gordon Zerbe\u2019s sampler is Walking the Streets of Paul\u2019s Philippi, Virtually; Candice Viddal offers A Hymn to God\u2019s Glory:\u00a0 Physics and the Spiritual Dimension; Tim Rogalsky presents Logic Unlocks Pauline Puzzles! Mathematics as a key to understanding the letters of Paul; and a workshop presentation by David Balzer explores The Art of Communicating in Church and Society or why I think our storytelling should be \u2018pathetic.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>CMU invites guests to stay for a free BBQ supper followed by an evening celebration service at 7 p.m. featuring the wonderful voices of CMU Alumni and Student choirs conducted by faculty members Janet Brenneman and Rudy Schellenberg, along with student sharing and a short address by CMU\u2019s President, Gerald Gerbrandt.<\/p>\n<p>CMU\u2019s full weekend schedule can be viewed online at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/fallfestival.html\">www.cmu.ca\/fallfestival.html<\/a>\u00a0 and on our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CMUwinnipeg\">Facebook Page Canadian Mennonite University<\/a>, Fall Festival tab.
