{"id":3614,"date":"2013-04-29T11:42:41","date_gmt":"2013-04-29T16:42:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/?p=3614"},"modified":"2013-11-20T12:09:43","modified_gmt":"2013-11-20T18:09:43","slug":"cmu-celebrates-class-of-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/2013\/cmu-celebrates-class-of-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"CMU Celebrates Class of 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>Dr. Cheryl Pauls awards 95 degrees, two certificates during first Graduation Service as CMU\u2019s president<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Winnipeg, April 29, 2013\u00a0\u2013 Canadian Mennonite University recognized the accomplishments of its students this past weekend, awarding degrees to 95 graduates and presenting program certificates to two recipients during its 2013 Graduation Exercises.<\/p>\n<p>The event, held on Sunday afternoon, April 28, at Immanuel Pentecostal Church, was the culmination of a weekend filled with reflection, laughter, and tears as graduates and families enjoyed times of sharing through stories, songs, presentations, and meals along with CMU faculty, staff, and current students.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3615\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3615\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_7802.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3615\" alt=\"CMU President Pauls addresses the graduating class of 2013 at Immanuel Pentecostal Church\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_7802-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_7802-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_7802-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3615\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CMU President Pauls addresses the graduating class of 2013 at Immanuel Pentecostal Church<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Presiding over graduation ceremonies for the first time, Dr. Cheryl Pauls\u2014who became President of CMU this past November\u2014welcomed everyone to the event by saying CMU faculty and staff felt honoured to celebrate the graduates\u2019 achievements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are people who have blessed us with their stories and insights, their passion and inventiveness,\u201d she said. \u201cThese are people whose imaginations for new possibilities, and faithfulness as citizens of God\u2019s world, have been growing at much the same rate. For all of these things, we are grateful to God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raya Cornelsen (BA, Four-Year, Mathematics Major) gave the Valedictory Address, speaking about conversation as \u201cthe greatest catalyst for change and personal or professional development,\u201d and elaborating that CMU has helped each graduate hone their conversation skills.<\/p>\n<p>She encouraged her fellow graduates to keep having conversations that include reflection, engagement, vulnerability, and excitement.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3616\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3616\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_7789_.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3616\" alt=\"Raya Cornelsen delivers her Valedictory Address; &quot;We are the voices\u2014the pastors, the teachers, the counsellors, the leaders, and yes, even the baristas\u2014who will carry on the least and the greatest conversations that this world has ever known.\u201d\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_7789_-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_7789_-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_7789_-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3616\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Raya Cornelsen delivers her Valedictory Address; &#8220;We are the voices\u2014the pastors, the teachers, the counsellors, the leaders, and yes, even the baristas\u2014who will carry on the least and the greatest conversations that this world has ever known.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAs we leave CMU today, we cannot cut off and lock away all that we have learned, experienced, and want to share,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are the voices\u2014the pastors, the teachers, the counsellors, the leaders, and yes, even the baristas\u2014who will carry on the least and the greatest conversations that this world has ever known.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Reg Litz, a professor at the University of Manitoba\u2019s Asper School of Business, delivered the Graduation Address. Litz encouraged graduates to \u201cthink small\u201d\u2014tackle large problems by breaking them into little pieces, and then get one small thing done at a time. This builds momentum that eventually will help get big things done.<\/p>\n<p>This way of thinking will help graduates as they face a world where things like global warming, fiscal deficits, and political instability are realities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do have some big problems\u2014after all, this is a fallen world,\u201d Litz said. \u201cBut that said, we are not alone, and our choices matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmall wins before a big God are still wins that matter,\u201d he added, before congratulating the graduates for their achievements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI encourage you to build on the foundation CMU has helped you lay,\u201d Litz said. \u201cI believe that as you look and act, He who calls you will help you find [the] way.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3617\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3617\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_7761.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3617\" alt=\"CMU President Pauls with 2013 President\u2019s Medal winners Nicole Richard and David Thiessen\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_7761-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_7761-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_7761-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3617\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CMU President Pauls with 2013 President\u2019s Medal winners Nicole Richard and David Thiessen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to conferring 95 degrees and two certificates, Pauls also awarded President\u2019s Medals to Nicole Richard (Bachelor of Music Therapy) and David Thiessen (BA, Four-Year Honours, Biblical and Theological Studies Major) in recognition of their qualities of scholarship, leadership, and service.<\/p>\n<p>The April 28 Graduation Service was the culmination of a number of other events that made the weekend special for graduates and their families, as well as for current students and visitors.
