{"id":3677,"date":"2013-05-10T14:42:18","date_gmt":"2013-05-10T19:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/?p=3677"},"modified":"2013-05-10T14:43:53","modified_gmt":"2013-05-10T19:43:53","slug":"cmu-student-athletes-achieve-academic-excellence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/2013\/cmu-student-athletes-achieve-academic-excellence\/","title":{"rendered":"CMU student athletes achieve academic excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Danielle Klassen has a moment of free time to study, she uses every minute of it.<\/p>\n<p>Klassen is one of 14 CMU students who achieved a 4.0 GPA in a full-time course load while also competing on a CMU athletics team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBalancing school and sports can definitely be a challenge,\u201d says Klassen, a first-year student from Calgary who attends Foothills Mennonite Church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(This past semester) I had to make sure I was using my time efficiently. I also made an effort to try to get assignments done ahead of time instead of leaving them to the night before.&#8221;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DanielleKlassen1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3678\" alt=\"DanielleKlassen1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DanielleKlassen1.jpg\" width=\"709\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DanielleKlassen1.jpg 709w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/DanielleKlassen1-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The time commitment needed for things like practices, games, and traveling for tournaments can be substantial.<\/p>\n<p>But the time and dedication needed to excel at both academic and athletic pursuits points to more than just an ability to work hard.<\/p>\n<p>According to Russell Willms, CMU\u2019s Director of Athletics, such abilities tend to translate well outside the CMU world, pointing to strength of character and ability to succeed after a student has long since graduated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe time, energy and attention that we have witnessed this year is a testament to the dedication of these students,\u201d says Willms.<\/p>\n<p>Nick Czehryn just completed his first year at CMU with a 4.0 GPA, while playing for the CMU Blazers soccer team.<\/p>\n<p>Although achieving the athletic-academic balance is challenging for Czehryn, the rewards outweigh the costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a high level of play, and good competition. Everyone\u2019s excited to be there, and achieving a good balance isn\u2019t as hard as I thought it might be. I enjoy being together with my team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Klassen also appreciates the time spent with her teammates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a priceless gift to be able to pay with girls who can be focused on the accomplishments of others as well as their own achievements,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Danielle Klassen has a moment of free time to study, she uses every minute of it.
