{"id":3715,"date":"2013-05-23T14:32:42","date_gmt":"2013-05-23T19:32:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/?p=3715"},"modified":"2013-05-28T15:26:33","modified_gmt":"2013-05-28T20:26:33","slug":"cmu-students-travel-to-latin-american-to-research-microfinance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/2013\/cmu-students-travel-to-latin-american-to-research-microfinance\/","title":{"rendered":"CMU students travel to Latin American to research microfinance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students from CMU\u2019s Redekop School of Business (RSB) have just returned home from the first RSB study tour to Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>From April 29 to May 13, six students and a supervising professor traveled to Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic to explore how microfinance\u2014providing small loans and financial services to the economically poor\u2014is being used to fight poverty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s exciting to see the students experience first-hand how their business skills can be used overseas in non-traditional ways,\u201d says Jeff Huebner, Associate Professor of International Business who led the tour.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3716\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3716\" style=\"width: 518px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/ladies.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3716 \" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/ladies.jpg\" width=\"518\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/ladies.jpg 1800w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/ladies-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/ladies-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3716\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RSB business students Lauren Cassie and Joni Sawatzky with a MiCredito loan client<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Before leaving Winnipeg, the students spent four months studying microfinance and writing research consulting reports for two partner organizations operating in Latin America, MEDA\/MiCredito and HOPE International.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b>They presented their research to the staff of these organizations, visited microenterprise clients and loan group meetings, and learned about the challenges and opportunities of doing business and development abroad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTextbooks just don\u2019t convey stories as well as standing face-to-face with actual people in the story,\u201d says Lauren Cassie, a fourth-year business major from Lorette, Manitoba.<\/p>\n<p>For Cassie, a highlight of the study tour was making the connection between her classroom learning and the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVisiting with individual clients and hearing how they had been personally impacted by the microfinance loans was awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) is one of the organizations RSB has partnered with, through their affiliate MiCredito in Nicaragua.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re delighted to see some of today\u2019s best and brightest young people get a firsthand exposure to a microfinance institution in action,\u201d says Bob Kroeker, MEDA regional director of resource development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis gives us a chance to introduce a new generation to the impact of creating business solutions to poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RSB offers study tours annually that are open to students, CMU alumni and supporters.
