{"id":4417,"date":"2014-05-14T10:28:23","date_gmt":"2014-05-14T15:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/?p=4417"},"modified":"2014-05-14T14:24:55","modified_gmt":"2014-05-14T19:24:55","slug":"cmu-congratulates-winners-of-2014-high-school-essay-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/2014\/cmu-congratulates-winners-of-2014-high-school-essay-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"CMU Congratulates Winners of 2014 High School Essay Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CMU is pleased to announce that Marta Bunnett of Havelock, NB; Francesca Cammarata of St. Albert, AB; and Larissa Campbell of Winnipeg, MB, are the winners of the 2014 High School Essay Contest.<\/p>\n<p>Students were asked to respond formally in a 950- to 1100-word essay to one of three questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What does it mean to \u201ccompare\u201d literature? Can the study of comparative literature foster mutual understanding among readers and between communities?<\/li>\n<li>How do visual media communicate and tell stories? Compare and contrast visual and written literacy.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWith great power comes great responsibility\u201d\u2014Voltaire. To what extent are wealthy, highly developed societies responsible for aiding \u201cdeveloping\u201d countries? What are some pros and pitfalls of \u201caid\u201d and \u201cinternational development\u201d?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Bunnett\u2019s essay Responsibility for a More Equitable World placed first, earning her $500 in prize money. Second place at $300 went to Cammarata for her paper Care with Consideration, and Campbell took third prize at $200 for her work on The Responsibilities of Developed Countries to Less-Developed Countries.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4428\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4428\" style=\"width: 549px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/EssayWinners.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-4428   \" alt=\"2014's High School Essay Contest Winners (l-r) Marta Marta Bunnett, Francesca Cammarata, and Larissa Campbell\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/EssayWinners-1024x682.jpeg\" width=\"549\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/EssayWinners-1024x682.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/EssayWinners-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4428\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2014&#8217;s High School Essay Contest Winners (l-r) Marta Marta Bunnett,<br \/>Francesca Cammarata, and Larissa Campbell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bunnett, who will be attending CMU in the fall to study International Development, says her interest in the subject first took root at her family\u2019s organic farm:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy parents have had a big influence on my thought in this area; on the farm, they always prioritized growing good food and caring for the land equally. They model a very relational perspective, in terms of how we should interact with the land and others, rather than a utilitarian one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bunnett says one reason she chose pros and cons of International Development for her topic was so she could use the project as a motivator to further research some of the issues in which she was already interested. She is excited to pursue International Development Studies formally at CMU this fall:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to deepen my understanding of these things. Right now I have ideas, but they are not all necessarily grounded in much; I want to study and participate in discussions and really work through these issues with others on a deeper level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cammarata, who will be graduating in June, said she was \u201cthrilled\u201d to place in the contest and aspires to pursue music studies for her post-secondary education.
