{"id":4651,"date":"2014-11-18T09:58:14","date_gmt":"2014-11-18T15:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/?p=4651"},"modified":"2014-11-18T12:05:57","modified_gmt":"2014-11-18T18:05:57","slug":"community-invited-to-celebrate-christmas-at-cmu-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/2014\/community-invited-to-celebrate-christmas-at-cmu-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Community invited to celebrate Christmas at CMU"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em>Annual concert draws alumni, friends from across Canada<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) invites the community to celebrate the start of Advent at its annual Christmas concert.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas at CMU takes place on Saturday, November 29 at the university (500 Shaftesbury Blvd.). There are two concerts: one at 2:30 PM and the other at 7:00 PM. Admission for both concerts is free, and all are welcome to attend.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/about.php?s=faculty&amp;id=480\" target=\"_blank\">Rudy Schellenberg<\/a>, Associate Professor of Music and one of the event\u2019s key organizers, is joyfully anticipating the concerts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Christmas-at-CMU-Poster.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4660\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Christmas-at-CMU-Poster-182x300.png\" alt=\"Christmas at CMU Poster\" width=\"350\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Christmas-at-CMU-Poster-182x300.png 182w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Christmas-at-CMU-Poster-621x1024.png 621w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Christmas-at-CMU-Poster.png 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>\u201cOne of the great things about Christmas at CMU is the mix of people,\u201d Schellenberg says. \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to the buzz created by the return of all these alumni and friends of CMU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The concert will feature a handful of new features this year, Schellenberg adds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/about.php?s=faculty&amp;id=474\" target=\"_blank\">Sue Sorensen<\/a>, Associate Professor of English, will present <em>A Christmas Home Companion at CMU<\/em>, which consists of her telling a series of short stories recounting some of her childhood Christmas experiences. CMU music faculty will perform accompaniment.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, all children and parents are welcome to make music with Rebecca Harder, an instructor with CMU\u2019s Community School of Music and the Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Recent additions to the program also include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/about.php?s=faculty&amp;id=487\" target=\"_blank\">Dietrich Bartel<\/a>, Associate Professor of Music, reading <em>How the Grinch Stole Christmas<\/em>, with CMU student Jesse Dollimont performing musical selections from the famed 1966 animated TV special to accompany him; a jazz guitar ensemble; a handbell ensemble; and percussionists playing steel drums.<\/p>\n<p>More than 100 performers are involved in the event, which also features CMU choirs; vocal and instrumental jazz; flute and classical guitar ensembles; and performances by the university\u2019s music faculty.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas at CMU is a multi-generational, interactive event that allows family, friends, and neighbours of all ages to mingle in CMU\u2019s beautiful heritage building.<\/p>\n<p>Since it was first held more than 10 years ago, Christmas at CMU has become an important event on the university\u2019s calendar. Alumni and friends from Saskatchewan, Alberta, and even southern Ontario travel to Winnipeg to attend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful gift we give to our constituency at Christmas,\u201d Schellenberg says of the concert.<\/p>\n<p>He adds that part of Christmas at CMU\u2019s appeal is that people who attend do not have to sit in the same spot for an hour-and-a-half.<\/p>\n<p>Music ensembles will be stationed in different parts of the university, allowing attendees to create their own concert by walking around the festively decorated campus\u2014all while enjoying hot apple cider and cookies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concert is created for people like me who can\u2019t sit for very long,\u201d Schellenberg quips. \u201cIf you can\u2019t sit longer than 20 minutes, you can leave after 10 and go get a cookie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the complete Christmas at CMU schedule, please visit <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/christmas\">www.cmu.ca\/christmas<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Immediately preceding Christmas at CMU, the public is invited to join students, staff, and faculty at the grand opening of Marpeck Commons, CMU\u2019s new library, learning commons, and bridge.
