{"id":4972,"date":"2015-02-13T22:05:15","date_gmt":"2015-02-14T04:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/?p=4972"},"modified":"2015-03-30T23:07:27","modified_gmt":"2015-03-31T04:07:27","slug":"inaugural-scientist-in-residence-offers-hope-during-week-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/2015\/inaugural-scientist-in-residence-offers-hope-during-week-on-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Inaugural Scientist-in-Residence offers hope during week on campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Asking questions and being faithful central themes as Dr. Henry Janzen visits CMU<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The importance of community, asking questions, collaborating, and trusting God were key themes as Dr. Henry Janzen visited Canadian Mennonite University earlier this month as the university\u2019s first-ever Scientist-in-Residence.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Janzen, a research scientist in soil biochemistry at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research centre in Lethbridge, AB, was on campus February 2-6.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">He shared his insights, observations, experience, and personal reflections in a number of speaking events including a student forum, chapel, and lecture.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">While sharing his faith story during a Tuesday morning chapel gathering, Janzen told students, faculty, and staff how he grew up as a timid farm boy ensconced in the church: \u201ctwo robust sermons on Sundays, bolstered by Sunday and Saturday school\u201d allowed him to grow in his faith.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4973\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4973\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC04278.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4973\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC04278-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Janzen addresses the audience at public lecture\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC04278-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC04278-1024x680.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4973\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Janzen addresses the audience at the public lecture on \u00a0February 4 at CMU&#8217;s Marpeck Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">As he left home to study and advanced in his education, Janzen\u2019s questions\u2014and his once-simple faith\u2014became more complex. The words of the disciple Thomas echoed in his mind: \u201cLord, I don\u2019t know where you are going, so how can I know the way?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Janzen went on to share that studying the story of Thomas has helped him see that questions are \u201cnot a peril, but a treasure.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">He added four things that he has learned during a lifetime of questioning: exploring questions is best done with other people; asking questions demands honesty and precise phrasing; the questions that hound him are often shared by others; and that Anabaptism compels him to test his \u201cfaith hypotheses in the experiment of daily dilemmas.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Janzen then quoted T.S. Eliot: \u201cWe shall not cease from exploration \/ And the end of all our exploring \/ Will be to arrive where we started \/ And know the place for the first time.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u201cThat\u2019s what I live for, my all-consuming hypothesis,\u201d Janzen said. \u201cThat the end of all my exploring will find me nearing home again, forgiven, quickening, re-awakening in the will and wake of One who all this time has been urging me home, steering me with the questions.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">In addition to sharing his faith story, Janzen gave a public lecture on February 4, titled, \u201cFollowing Carbon Flows Through Life and Times.\u201d Janzen provided an overview of the carbon cycle and the way its flows connect all species in a planet-wide continuum. He also explored some questions that emerge: questions relevant to all of us, enfolding interwoven strands of science, of ethics, and ultimately, of hope.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The following evening, Janzen participated in the latest installment of \u201cGerminating Conversations,\u201d an ongoing series of dialogues that brings together people from urban and rural locations to discuss faith, food, farming, and land from a range of perspectives.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">During his time at CMU, Janzen lived in the university\u2019s residence and ate in the cafeteria, where he eagerly interacted with students.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Dr. John Brubacher, Assistant Professor of Biology at CMU, said he greatly appreciated Janzen\u2019s visit and the fresh perspectives he brought to campus.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u201cHe\u2019s a soil chemist but he speaks like a poet,\u201d Brubacher said. \u201cHe\u2019s got a great way of communicating and a deep humility that make him very accessible and approachable.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Dr. Tim Rogalsky, Chair of the Science and Faith Advisory Committee, which was responsible for organizing Janzen\u2019s visit, agreed.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u201cHenry is an engaging speaker, and he offered a sense of hopefulness despite some of the doom and gloom surrounding issues of global environmental change,\u201d Rogalsky said. \u201cIt was a great week.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Janzen, a long-time CMU supporter whose three children were students at the university, described his time as Scientist-in-Residence as enlightening and energizing.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria; font-size: medium;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u201cI\u2019ve had a real education here in a week,\u201d Janzen said, adding that being able to dialogue with faculty from a variety of disciplines, as well as students and members of the wider community, stretched his thinking.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Cambria;
