{"id":5083,"date":"2015-05-25T08:48:17","date_gmt":"2015-05-25T13:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/?p=5083"},"modified":"2015-05-22T16:15:44","modified_gmt":"2015-05-22T21:15:44","slug":"graduates-receive-award-from-cmu-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/2015\/graduates-receive-award-from-cmu-president\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduates receive award from CMU president"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Rebecca Klassen-Wiebe and Mike Wiebe take home President\u2019s Medals for scholarship, leadership, and service<\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rebecca Klassen-Wiebe and Mike Wiebe are the 2015 recipients of Canadian Mennonite University\u2019s (CMU) President\u2019s Medals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">CMU President Cheryl Pauls awarded the medals during CMU\u2019s 2015 Graduation Exercises on April 26. Klassen-Wiebe and Wiebe (no relation) received the awards in recognition of their qualities of scholarship, leadership, and service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cCMU has been a very important place for me for the years I\u2019ve been here, so getting this award means a great deal to me,\u201d Klassen-Wiebe says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Klassen-Wiebe, 22, and Wiebe, 21, were chosen from a group of 89 graduates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Klassen-Wiebe, who lives in Winnipeg\u2019s River Heights neighbourhood, graduated with a Bachelor of Music, Concentration: Performance \u2013 Collaborative Piano.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5085\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5085\" style=\"width: 399px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5085\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/s-Medals-2015-01-300x168.jpeg\" alt=\"Rebecca Klassen-Wiebe (left) with CMU President Cheryl Pauls and Michael Wiebe \" width=\"399\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/s-Medals-2015-01-300x168.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/s-Medals-2015-01-1024x572.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5085\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rebecca Klassen-Wiebe (left) and Michael Wiebe (right), recipients of 2015&#8217;s\u00a0President&#8217;s Medals, pose with CMU President Cheryl Pauls<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During her time at CMU, she immersed herself in university life by living on campus, working as a residence assistant, singing in choirs, performing with various music ensembles, and attending chapel services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She is also involved at Charleswood Mennonite Church and has spent numerous summers working as a camp counsellor at Mennonite Church Manitoba\u2019s Camps With Meaning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mike Wiebe, who is originally from Gretna, MB, graduated with a four-year Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Communications and Media. During his time at CMU, Wiebe lived on campus for two years and worked as a residence assistant for one of those years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He played guitar in worship band, participated in chapel services, sang in a number of choirs, and worked on campus as a sound engineer. Like Klassen-Wiebe, he has spent many summers working at Camps With Meaning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For Wiebe, highlights of studying at CMU included growing deeper in his faith by studying Mennonite history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAside from my communications studies, courses on Mennonite studies and defining Anabaptism have impacted me and made me excited about work in the church,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Klassen-Wiebe says she has enjoyed studying at CMU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI have loved seeing the interweaving of music and faith through my education here,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Janet Brenneman, Dean of CMU\u2019s School of Music and one of Klassen-Wiebe\u2019s professors, says Klassen-Wiebe demonstrated what it means to be a music student at CMU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cShe got involved in as many music activities as she could, she took her studies very seriously, she got involved in the life of CMU outside of music, and I think people on campus knew her for her music abilities and beyond,\u201d Brenneman says. \u201cShe is hardworking, a fine musician, a much-loved student, and a really great person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">David Balzer, Assistant Professor of Media and Communications and one of Mike Wiebe\u2019s professors, describes Wiebe as a hardworking, passionate student who demonstrated creativity in his assignments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At the same time, Balzer notes Wiebe\u2019s contributions to the CMU community outside of the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMike just simply invests in people,\u201d Balzer says. \u201cIf he\u2019s passionate about the academic side, I think he\u2019s equally passionate about noticing people and giving what he has to them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Both President\u2019s Medal recipients are in the midst of discerning what comes next in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Right now, they are working together for the next three months as co-directors of the summer program at Camp Assiniboia, located 20 minutes southwest of Winnipeg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI hope that my future will be able to integrate my love of people, of music, and of faith in some way,\u201d Klassen-Wiebe says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mike Wiebe says that receiving the President\u2019s Medal has caused him to reflect on his CMU experience and appreciate it even more, because he has realized how invested he was in the university over the past four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis place has really impacted my life\u2026 and I think I\u2019ve somehow, in some way, made CMU a part of my daily living,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>About CMU<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>A Christian university in the Anabaptist tradition, CMU\u2019s Shaftesbury campus offers undergraduate degrees in arts, business, humanities, music, sciences, and social sciences, as well as\u00a0graduate degrees in theology,\u00a0ministry, peacebuilding and collaborative development, and an MBA.
