Everyone is invited to attend this free event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI hope this book will help readers enter into the lives of people who become refugees,\u201d Martens says, adding that it wasn\u2019t just Mennonites that Stalin displaced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMany nationalities were exiled, torn from their homes, some of them never to return. They were wiped off the map as if they never existed, which is why the book is called <i>To and From Nowhere<\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Greta was a real person who belonged to Martens\u2019 extended family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Based on painstaking historical research and interviews with Greta and her family, <i>To and From Nowhere<\/i> tells a harrowing and beautiful story in the unusual style that Martens has fused, combining narrative, biography, poetry, history, and personal reflection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>To and From Nowhere<\/i> is the conclusion of a two-part project that began with the publication of Martens\u2019 2010 novel, <i>Favoured Among Women<\/i>, which the <i>Winnipeg Free Press<\/i> called a \u201cdetailed and touching portrait of a Mennonite woman during the harsh early years of Soviet Russia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Sue Sorensen, Associate Professor of English at CMU, served as editor for both <i>Favoured Among Women<\/i> and <i>To and From Nowhere<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sorensen calls the new book unique and adds that readers will gain insight into history\u2014especially war\u2014and at the same time be moved by the details of a real family\u2019s day-to-day existence.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5453\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5453\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2015-11-30-To-and-From-Nowhere-02.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5453 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2015-11-30-To-and-From-Nowhere-02-240x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Martens, a retired family therapist, spent three decades working on Greta Enns\u2019 story.\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2015-11-30-To-and-From-Nowhere-02-240x300.jpeg 240w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2015-11-30-To-and-From-Nowhere-02-819x1024.jpeg 819w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Martens, a retired family therapist, spent three decades working on Greta Enns\u2019 story.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn addition to that, you are drawn into the author\u2019s process as she herself comments on her interactions with the material she is writing about,\u201d Sorensen says. \u201cThere\u2019s a beautiful resonance to all these different voices and writing styles living side-by-side in the book.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sorensen adds that Martens has a gift for bringing characters to life. \u201cBecause of Hedy\u2019s skill I felt like I also had met Greta,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">CMU Press is pleased to publish <i>To and From Nowhere<\/i>, says General Editor Dr. Paul Doerksen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHedy has provided an invaluable contribution by bringing to view the experience of particular characters, allowing us to both witness and imagine some of the experiences which enable us to deepen our own understanding of historical circumstances, personal encounters, struggles of faith, and so on,\u201d Doerksen says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhile the book focuses on particularities, nonetheless it has the capacity to speak to a reading audience that is much broader than any single ethnic or religious group.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Martens, a retired family therapist, recently celebrated her 80th birthday.
