That\u2019s where Adelia Neufeld Wiens comes in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This past October, Neufeld Wiens joined CMU to provide additional support related to career resourcing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Each Tuesday, Neufeld Wiens is available to meet one-on-one with students who want to discuss their studies and career aspirations.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5590\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5590\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Wiens.A.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5590 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Wiens.A-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"Adelia Neufeld Wiens \" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Wiens.A-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Wiens.A-1024x725.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Wiens.A.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5590\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adelia Neufeld Wiens, helping students understand the link between the knowledge and skills they acquire in the classroom and their career goals.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">From resum\u00e9 creation to strategizing for work after university, Neufeld Wiens\u2014who worked at CMU as Coordinator of Student Advising from 2006 to 2013\u2014covers a variety of different topics depending on the student\u2019s needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Neufeld Wiens can help students narrate transferable skills from university studies and practicum; find vocabulary to describe their aptitudes and interests; identify networking opportunities for employment; strategize for a \u201cgap year\u201d before continuing further studies; and give them things to think about as they consider what to major in at CMU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s a valuable role that gives students an additional resource as they prepare for the working world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is a conversation that a lot of students want to have, and it can be a source of tremendous anxiety,\u201d Neufeld Wiens says. \u201cIn my sessions with students, they can talk about what they\u2019re thinking and dreaming, and we can strategize the best way forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Occasionally, Neufeld Wiens introduces students to different theories of vocational development and career planning, and helps them assess their learning style.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cEvery week, I\u2019m learning about different questions to ask the students I meet with, and I\u2019m discovering different resources that are out there that I can bring to my work with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">CMU\u2019s career resourcing efforts help students understand the link between the knowledge and skills they acquire in the classroom and their career goals, says Marilyn Peters Kliewer, Dean of Student Life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThey\u2019re learning how to be critical thinkers, how to be problem solvers, how to communicate well, and how to work with others as a team,\u201d she says. \u201cThese are important skills.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Neufeld Wiens has a variety of work experience. After earning a Master of Arts degree in Religion from the University of Manitoba, she taught courses at the U of M and at Canadian Mennonite Bible College, one of CMU\u2019s predecessor institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At the same time, she was working at St. Boniface Hospital as the volunteer coordinator in the palliative care unit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Neufeld Wiens later became the chapel coordinator at CMU. Eventually, she and her husband Werner moved to Nairobi, Kenya, where he taught and she worked as a guidance counselor at Rosslyn Academy, a school serving the children of missionaries, diplomats, and internationals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She also writes for the <i>Winnipeg Free Press<\/i> on a freelance basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI sometimes tell students about the nonlinear career path I\u2019ve taken, and how serendipitous events often come into play,\u201d Neufeld Wiens says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Her work experience and deep knowledge of CMU\u2019s programs make her well suited for her current role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAdelia\u2019s very good at what she does,\u201d Peters Kliewer says. \u201cShe is helping our students embrace the skills they are learning in the classroom. If they feel good about those skills, they will also feel more confident in getting a job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Neufeld Wiens says the biggest thing she tries to express to students is that carving out a career is an ongoing process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s important to recognize that this is a journey, and the journey is life-long,\u201d she says. \u201cFind allies to help you on your journey, and be an ally so you can help others along the way.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Transitioning from university to the working world can be tricky.
