She moved to Winnipeg three years ago to continue her studies, and plans to pursue a degree in music therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Chin says that in Korea, she didn\u2019t enjoy performing because it made her too nervous. That has changed since she arrived in Canada. Because English is not her first language, she has come to enjoy performing because it is a way for her to communicate with others and express herself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt is interesting and fun to play,\u201d says Chin, adding that she didn\u2019t expect to win. \u201cI thought about showing my everything\u2014not getting nervous, and just showing them what I prepared. I only thought about that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Chin\u2019s performance was breathtaking, says Dr. Janet Brenneman, Dean of the School of Music at CMU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cShe was engaging, imaginative, and inspiring,\u201d Brenneman says. \u201cIt was clear that the audience was in awe of her performance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Breanna Heinrichs, a pianist in her fourth and final year of a Bachelor of Music, placed second and received $500. Third place and its $300 prize went to baritone singer Matthew Baron, also in his final year of study at CMU.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5654\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5654\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_3038.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5654\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_3038-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Yunah Chin, the winner of  the11th Annual Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition.\" width=\"250\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_3038-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_3038-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yunah Chin, the winner of the11th annual Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Alyssa Hildebrand (soprano), Anneli Loepp Thiessen (piano), Elowen Braunstein-Black (soprano), and Nathan Sawatzky-Dyck (baritone) also made it to the finals, advancing from a group of 14 competitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Judy Kehler Siebert, a Manitoba native with an international reputation as a pianist, chamber musician, and teacher, and Monica Huisman, an acclaimed lyric soprano from Winnipeg, served as adjudicators for the finals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Brenneman says she was impressed with the quality of musicianship in the competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cEach student performed in ways that demonstrated the musical growth they have made during their studies at CMU,\u201d Brenneman says, adding that the preliminary round of the competition, which included 14 students, was also very strong. \u201cThe decision to advance students to the final round was not an easy task for CMU music faculty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5653\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5653\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_3085.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5653\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_3085-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Finalists of the 11th annual Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition.\" width=\"370\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_3085-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IMG_3085-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Finalists of the 11th annual Verna Mae Janzen Music Competition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The competition is made possible by Peter Janzen of Deep River, Ontario, and named in memory of his wife, Verna Mae, who died of cancer in 1989 at age 53. Janzen attends the final round of competition each year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is now a much-anticipated event, and a tradition that we are proud to have established at CMU,\u201d Brenneman says. \u201cWe continue to be grateful to Dr. Janzen for his generous donation and support of this competition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For Janzen, sponsoring the event is a way to contribute toward the success of CMU.
