Jonas Cornelsen tackled the query head on during his valedictory address at Canadian Mennonite University\u2019s (CMU) graduation service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe the opportunities we have had to sit in class or outside of class and wrestle with deep, complex questions about life, about faith, and about the world have\u2026 enhanced also our capacity to love each other, to love God, and to love all of creation more deeply,\u201d Cornelsen (BA, Four-Year, Political Studies, Communications and Media) said during the service, held on Sunday afternoon, April 24 at Immanuel Pentecostal Church.<\/p>\n<p>During the address, Cornelsen meditated on the Class of 2016\u2019s graduation verse, Philippians 1:9: \u201cAnd this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5800\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5800\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_8346.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5800\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_8346-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8346\" width=\"250\" height=\"375\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5800\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jonas Cornelsen, Valedictorian for CMU&#8217;s class of 2016<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEducation is a great gift and we can all respond in gratitude by humbly sharing the knowledge and insight we have gained and (received) from others, by showing love to all of those we meet, living by the Creator\u2019s grace, Christ\u2019s example, and the Spirit\u2019s hope in a broken world,\u201d Cornelsen concluded. \u201c<em>That <\/em>is what you can really do with a degree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was an eloquent, hope-filled message delivered toward the end of a weekend filled with reflection, laughter, and tears as graduates and families enjoyed stories, songs, presentations, and meals along with CMU faculty, staff, and current students.<\/p>\n<p>The graduation service culminated with CMU President Dr. Cheryl Pauls conferring 84 undergraduate degrees, four Master of Arts degrees, and one graduate certificate in Biblical and Theological Studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn this day of celebration, we collectively honour work well done by 89 fine men and women,\u201d Pauls said before addressing the graduates directly: \u201cWe as faculty and staff draw courage in the generosity of being that shapes your faith, your character, your tangible skills, and your vibrant imagination.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5798\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5798\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a Jonas Cornelsen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pauls awarded President\u2019s Medals to Cornelsen and Kathleen Bergen (BA, Four-Year, Biblical and Theological Studies) in recognition of their qualities of scholarship, leadership, and service.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the service, Sister Lesley Sacouman delivered the graduation address.<\/p>\n<p>Sacouman, who co-founded Winnipeg\u2019s Rossbrook House, which has provided a safe haven for tens of thousands of children, and who currently works with newcomers to Canada, urged listeners to consider the question: \u201cWhere for you does your deep gladness and the world\u2019s hunger meet?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5801\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5801\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_8354.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5801\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_8354-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8354\" width=\"250\" height=\"375\" House, challenged\u00a0the graduates to provide &#8220;compassionate and principled leadership&#8221; in her address<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cGraduates, the world needs you. The world needs compassionate and principled leadership,\u201d she said. \u201cMay God\u2019s merciful gaze embolden you to walk through the door of mercy and embrace the\u2026suffering Christ in your midst.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At With Gratitude, a CMU graduation weekend event at which graduates share their experiences through spoken word or musical performance, Beth Downey Sawatzky (BA, Four-Year, English) reflected on how the faculty, staff, and students at CMU have cultivated \u201can institutional culture of kindness rather than one of prestige or competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I have learned anything at CMU that will stay with me no matter what the future holds, it\u2019s that if we as Christians truly believe what we claim to believe, we can always afford to be kind,\u201d she said. \u201cI hope whatever I become\u2014professor, priest, mother, all or none of the above\u2014I hope whatever I become that I will be rebelliously kind; that I will be as rebelliously courageous as my mentors of the last five years have been.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5795\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5795\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_8121.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5795 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_8121-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8121\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_8121-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_8121-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5795\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CMU&#8217;s class of 2016<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking at the same event, Nonsi Sibanda (BBA, Business Management) shared how she was fortunate to move from Zimbabwe to study at CMU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got an opportunity to grow in a place where my career options are not limited (and) where there is hope for a bright future,\u201d Sibanda said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that prior to coming to CMU, she understood business and Christianity as two separate domains with no connections.
