{"id":6450,"date":"2017-04-27T16:13:27","date_gmt":"2017-04-27T21:13:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/?p=6450"},"modified":"2017-04-28T10:44:46","modified_gmt":"2017-04-28T15:44:46","slug":"canadian-mennonite-university-celebrates-class-of-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/2017\/canadian-mennonite-university-celebrates-class-of-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Mennonite University celebrates Class of 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Canadian Mennonite University recognized the accomplishments of the Class of 2017 during graduation weekend, held April 21 to April 23, a time filled with reflection, laughter, and tears.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The weekend culminated with CMU President Dr. Cheryl Pauls conferring 70 undergraduate degrees, seven graduate degrees, one undergraduate certificate, and three graduate certificates, at the graduation service held at Immanuel Pentecostal Church on Sunday, April 23.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAll of us, your teachers, are grateful to you graduands for opening our eyes to new ways of seeing, hearing, and reflecting,\u201d Pauls said. \u201cMay the wonder of God\u2019s love ever inspire the vocation of your hearts, hands, and minds as you move from this place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pauls conferred two degrees for the first time ever: Anika Reynar became the first student to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts (Four-Year) in Interdisciplinary Studies; and Michael Duerksen and Wesley Ngwenya became the first students to graduate from CMU\u2019s collaborative Master of Business Administration program.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pauls awarded President\u2019s Medals to Reynar and Nicholas Czehryn (BA, Four-Year, Psychology) in recognition of their qualities of scholarship, leadership, and service.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6452\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6452\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC05925.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6452 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC05925-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC05925-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC05925-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC05925-1024x680.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anika Reynar delivers her valedictory address<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Earlier in the service, Reynar delivered the valedictory address, based on the graduation verse from Proverbs 24:13-14: \u201cMy child, eat honey, for it is good, and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste. Know that wisdom is such to your soul; if you find it, you will find a future, and your hope will not be cut off.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Reynar said that at CMU, she and her peers were encouraged to learn, think, question, and love, especially in those times when they felt lost, overwhelmed, and disoriented.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cRecognize that who you are and who you have become during your time at CMU is a gift from your friends, mentors, family members, and church community that surround you,\u201d Reynar told her fellow graduates.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWherever you find yourself next, carry this place and these people with you,\u201d she added. \u201cWhen you are lost and overwhelmed, remember to take risks and to start learning, questioning, and loving. Ask for help connected to the community and place where you are; then you will continue to find the sweetness of friendship and to be surprised by the gift of wisdom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After Reynar spoke, Adrian Jacobs delivered the graduation address, titled, \u201cWho Are You in a Kairos Moment?\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6453\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6453\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0424.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6453 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0424-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0424-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0424-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0424-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adrian Jacobs, Keeper of the Circle at Sandy-Saulteaux Spiritual Centre, urged students to pursue peace and justice with integrity<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jacobs, who is Keeper of the Circle at Sandy-Saulteaux Spiritual Centre, an Aboriginal Theological and Ministry Training Program of the United Church of Canada in Beausejour, MB, pointed out that in 2017, Protestants are celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, and Canadians are celebrating the 150th anniversary of confederation.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">These are potentially kairos moments, Jacobs said: moments in which God is speaking in some way.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cKeeping up to date in your understanding of the times in which you live, and knowing for sure what God wants you to do, is key to fulfilling Creator\u2019s purpose in your life,\u201d Jacobs said, later challenging the graduates to live with integrity, working for peace and justice.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cGraduates of Canadian Mennonite University, who are you in this kairos moment of 2017?\u201d Jacobs asked at the end of his address.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At With Gratitude, a CMU graduation weekend event at which graduates share their experiences through spoken word or musical performance, Hannah Stoesz (BA, Four-Year, Social Science \u2013 Counselling Studies) reflected on how CMU is an encouraging place where students can safely share their dreams, doubts, and goals.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6451\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6451\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0278.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6451 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0278-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"CMU's class of 2017\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0278-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0278-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0278-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CMU&#8217;s class of 2017<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe things I have learned, and the people I have encountered at CMU, have helped me grow\u2026 and have given me a solid base from which I\u2019m already beginning to interact with and find my place outside of CMU,\u201d Stoesz said. \u201cI will always be grateful for me time here.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Speaking at the same event, Meara Sparling (BMus, Concentration: Music Education\u2014Early\/Middle Years) reflected on how much she has grown over the past four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI was pushed out of my comfort zone over and over, and presented with opportunities I don\u2019t believe I could find anywhere else,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At CMU, Sparling was encouraged to take on leadership roles in her church.
