{"id":6565,"date":"2017-07-07T09:00:36","date_gmt":"2017-07-07T14:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/?p=6565"},"modified":"2017-07-05T11:17:01","modified_gmt":"2017-07-05T16:17:01","slug":"graduate-student-explores-his-mennonite-roots-at-cmu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/2017\/graduate-student-explores-his-mennonite-roots-at-cmu\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate student explores his Mennonite roots at CMU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhat does it mean for me to be a Mennonite?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the question that brought Daniel\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u00a0to CMU.\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u00a0is finding the answers to that question as he works toward a Master of Arts in Theological Studies in CMU\u2019s Graduate School of Theology and Ministry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6566\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6566\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6566 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Daniel-Rempel-02.resize-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Daniel Rempel\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Daniel-Rempel-02.resize-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Daniel-Rempel-02.resize-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Daniel-Rempel-02.resize-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Daniel-Rempel-02.resize.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6566\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daniel Rempel, student with CMU&#8217;s Graduate School of Theology and Ministry: &#8220;You come together with people who have similar goals and a similar desire to better understand God.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u2019s question first occurred to him while he was earning an undergraduate degree in Biblical and Theological Studies from Providence University College in\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Otterburne\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Otterburne<\/span>, MB.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I was there, I got introduced to a whole host of other denominations,\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u00a0says, including Anglicans, Baptists, and Pentecostals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing introduced to all these other Christian traditions caused me to really start thinking about what it means for me to be a Mennonite\u2026 Is it something I identify with because I believe in it? Or is it something I identify with because I don\u2019t know anything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Studying in the Graduate School of Theology and Ministry, where the professors are approaching topics from an Anabaptist perspective, has stoked\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u2019s interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing to theology from that perspective has been enriching and made me want to learn more about my tradition,\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u00a0says.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway through his degree,\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u00a0is enjoying his time at CMU. The academics are rigorous, but professors are always available to support students and help them succeed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPretty much every professor that I\u2019ve had has just been fantastic,\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u00a0says. His fellow students are also fantastic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t learn in isolation, and so I\u2019ve always found the classroom to be a life-giving place,\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u00a0says. \u201cYou come together with people who have similar goals and a similar desire to better understand God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his classmates,\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u00a0has found people he can be friends with, bounce ideas off of, and continue the conversation with once class is over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s been helpful and beneficial,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The affordability of tuition and the availability of bursaries has also made studying at CMU worthwhile,\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u00a0adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompared to other schools it is very affordable, and I\u2019ve been fortunate to be on the receiving end of some very significant bursaries from some very generous donors,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u00a0is preparing to write a thesis that will explore how the church can be more welcoming and inclusive toward people with disabilities. His interest in the topic stems from working in group homes for the past two years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been really enlivened by that work,\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u00a0says. \u201cMy eyes have been opened to the world that people with disabilities are living in\u2026 (It) has led me to ask some of these questions, and I\u2019m looking for theological answers to my questions.\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u00a0is considering doing a PhD after he finishes his Master\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m definitely trying to keep that door open, but ultimately what drives me in my studies is that I want to do theology in a way that benefits the church,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, he\u2019s happy at CMU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very thankful for the people here and for what I\u2019ve learned so far,\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\" data-scayt-word=\"Rempel\" data-scayt-lang=\"en_CA\">Rempel<\/span>\u00a0says. \u201cI\u2019m about halfway through my degree now, and I\u2019m looking forward to what\u2019s to come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhat does it mean for me to be a Mennonite?\u201d That\u2019s the question that brought Daniel\u00a0Rempel\u00a0to CMU.\u00a0Rempel\u00a0is finding the answers to that question as he works toward a Master of Arts in Theological Studies in CMU\u2019s Graduate School of Theology and Ministry.
