{"id":6611,"date":"2017-10-17T09:18:08","date_gmt":"2017-10-17T14:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/?p=6611"},"modified":"2017-10-16T16:38:21","modified_gmt":"2017-10-16T21:38:21","slug":"cmu-community-orchestra-to-celebrate-the-reformation-at-special-concert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/media_archive\/2017\/cmu-community-orchestra-to-celebrate-the-reformation-at-special-concert\/","title":{"rendered":"CMU, community orchestra to celebrate the Reformation at special concert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The public is invited to a concert at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) celebrating the Protestant Reformation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">CMU, in collaboration with the Mennonite Community Orchestra, will present \u201cReformation 500\u201d this coming Sunday, October 22 at 3:00 PM in the Loewen Athletic Centre (500 Shaftesbury Blvd.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/uploaded\/images\/ref500concertposter.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cmu.ca\/uploaded\/images\/ref500concertposter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a>Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students, and are available at the door. Children 12 and under receive free admission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The orchestra, under the direction of conductor Neil Weisensel, will perform Felix Mendelssohn\u2019s <i>Symphony No. 5<\/i>, also known as the Reformation symphony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Janet Brenneman, Associate Professor of Music, will lead a choir made up of CMU alumni, the orchestra, and soloists in performing J.S. Bach\u2019s <i>Cantata No. 79<\/i> and <i>Cantata No. 80<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Soloists include acclaimed Winnipeg singer Rachel Landrecht, as well as three members of CMU\u2019s faculty: voice instructor Rose van der Hooft, political studies instructor James Magnus-Johnston, and music lecturer Matthew Pauls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The concert is a way for CMU to celebrate the 500<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> anniversary of the Protestant Reformation through music, says Dr. Dietrich Bartel, Dean of CMU\u2019s School of Music, who will host Sunday\u2019s concert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Reformation was sparked on October 31, 1517 when Martin Luther sent his <i>Ninety-Five Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences<\/i> to the Archbishop of Mainz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMy hope is that we can celebrate the Reformation as part of the story of the church, while also being careful to make sure that we also are critical of the story,\u201d Bartel says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He adds that the three musical pieces that will be performed are linked. Each significantly quotes \u201cA Mighty Fortress is Out God,\u201d one of Luther\u2019s best known hymns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI always thought we should be putting our CMU choirs and the Mennonite Community Orchestra together,\u201d Bartel says of the collaboration, adding that the rehearsals for the concert have gone well. \u201cEverybody\u2019s pretty excited about how things are coming together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThings are sounding really great,\u201d he adds. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be grand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"hr\" style=\"clear: none;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><em><strong>About CMU<br \/>\n<\/strong>A Christian university in the Anabaptist tradition, CMU\u2019s Shaftesbury campus offers undergraduate degrees in arts, business, humanities, music, sciences, and social sciences, as well as\u00a0graduate degrees in theology,\u00a0ministry, peacebuilding and collaborative development, and an MBA.
