Winter 2020 Course Completion Information

There will no longer be in-person classes held for the remainder of the semester. Administrators and instructors are working diligently to ensure you as students are able to complete the course work and receive credit for your courses. Below is very important information you need to know. Please read carefully.

Altered Withdrawal Dates
The voluntary withdrawal due date will be changed to March 20, 2020. Consult with your instructor or have a conversation with Vern Kehler, vkehler:@:cmu.ca if you are unsure if you should continue in the class. If you choose to withdraw from a course(s), complete the course change form.

Classes are moving to an online format. Depending on the type of course, this format may take a variety of forms:

  • Email based independent study
  • Meetings through an online platform (eg. Zoom)
  • Using a Learning Management Software system (eg. Moodle, OneNote, CMU Faculty Portal)
  • Pre-recorded lectures for students to access

The main goal is to ensure you are able to get the course adequate content and instructions to complete your course(s). Faculty members have various capacities in terms of online course delivery. Be patient and recognize the large pedagogical shift that is happening in a very short amount of time. Technical issues may occur.

Course Resources and Supplies

  • Students will need a computer with internet access, along with appropriate notes and books, outlined in each course syllabus.
  • Additional details for each course will be provided and communicated by the instructors.
  • Students will log into Learning Management Software using CMU accounts.

Be in touch with our IT Department if you have difficulty accessing the online course resources or if you need your password reset.

In-class Examinations are cancelled for the semester. Faculty are adjusting syllabi to accommodate different forms of examination. Your instructors will be in contact with you to provide further information.

Library Resources
At present, the library will remain open to CMU students, staff, and faculty. The library and instructors are working hard to minimize a student's need to access paper copies of books. CMU has lots of peer-reviewed academic journals and electronic resources for students to access. For updated library hours, see the library website.

Course Work Submission
Written Assignments must be submitted using electronic means. You are not allowed to submit paper. Instructors may request submission through a variety of ways and it is important you submit assignments according to your instructor's instructions.:

Work Space
The CMU campus will remain open to students, staff, and faculty. Students may choose to work from home or from student spaces on campus. Marpeck Commons and north side are only accessible through prox cards (your student ID is a prox card). When meeting with instructors or fellow students, observe social distancing practices (2 metres distance).

Graduation
Convocation ceremonies set for April 25, 2020 will be postponed to a later date (TBD). Degrees will be conferred on April 24, 2020. Transcripts and degree parchments will be made available to students after degree conferral. Further information will be provided to graduating students. There will be a virtual conferral of degrees on April 25, 2020. Details will follow how to access it online.

Extensions
Instructors have the discretion to grant extensions within the semester. In this situation, medical documentation will not be required if you are ill. If you are granted an extension, make sure you and the instructor are clear regarding the revised timelines.

If you need to request an extension beyond April 15, the you must request the extension through the Registrar's Office.

Individual Applied Music Studies (IAMS)
Information about IAMS and final recitals will be communicated separately to IAMS instructors and students.

Ensembles
Ensembles for the semester have ended. There will be no public performances for the remainder of the semester. A grade will be assigned based on work completed.

Laboratories
Information about lab completion will be sent to you by the instructor.

Practica and Internships
Further communication will be sent out no later than Tuesday regarding completion of practica and internships.

Accessibility Needs
If students have accommodation needs or requests, they should be in contact with Sandra Loeppky or Stephanie Penner.

On-Campus Counselling Services
Counselling services will still be available in some cases by phone or internet. Students are encouraged to continue making counselling appointments online, and to be in direct contact with Counsellors.
