FROM COURT TO COACH FOR McCULLOUGH
After receiving many awards and recognitions for her play at CMU in her graduating year, CMU Athletics is pleased to announce that the 2010 MCAC Women’s Basketball Most Valuable Player will become the new head coach of the CMU women’s basketball team for 2010-11. “Christie Anne has been an amazing player and ambassador for CMU during her time here as an athlete and as a student,” explained CMU Director of Athletics, Russell Willms. “When you watch her play, she is almost like a coach already. Christie Anne is a natural leader and she is a great fit for our program. I think she has a very bright future in coaching.”McCullough spent her first three years of university athletic eligibility with CMU, before leaving for Brandon University and a year in the CIS in 2008, playing for former CMU head coach Jaime Hickson. McCullough returned to CMU in 2009 and will be graduating this spring with a degree in History. She played an instrumental role in the success of the women’s basketball team this year, scoring better than 12 points per game and showing her court vision by leading the conference in assists. ATHLETES EARN TOP MARKS 59 ATHLETES HONOURED WITH MCAC SCHOLAR AWARDS

At its annual Athletics Awards Banquet on March 19, 2010, CMU Athletics Department took pride in honouring 69% of its student athletes who completed their CMU sports seasons in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) with grade point averages of 3.0 or higher.
CMU, recognizing 59 out of 85 student athletes for their 2009-2010 academic achievements, earned top honours among all schools in the Manitoba Conference. Students earned the distinction of being named Scholar Athletes, a term similar to that of Academic All-Canadian (for athletes earning an 80% average or higher) in use at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) conference level. At CIS, the 2008-2009 count for All-Canadians was just over 20% across all member-institutions.
Including CMU and the five colleges in the MCAC conference, where time and travel commitments tend to be lower than at CIS league levels, all MCAC members exceeded CIS results significantly. MCAC results ranged from 42% of athletes earning the Scholar distinction at one college, to CMU’s top-of-class achievement with 69% of its athletes being recognized for this important academic award.
“We are extremely proud of our students for their academic accomplishments,” says CMU Athletic s Director Russell Willms. “At CMU, we expect and encourage our athletes to maintain high academic standards, and their performance as a group this year has been simply outstanding.”
“MCAC has displayed unparalleled academic achievement for athletes in Canadian post-secondary institutions,” the MCAC website reports. “These efforts clearly make Manitoba colleges highly sought after destinations for student athletes who wish to attain a high level of scholastic achievement and learning, all while competing in an elite level of [college and university] athletics.”

BLAZERS WIN CHAMPIONSHIP ON HOME COURT
More than 300 spectators packed the Loewen Athletic Centre on Saturday night to witness CMU defeat Red River College 70-26 to win the 2010 MCAC Championship. Despite the lopsided final score, the two teams were very evenly matched in the first half. In fact, the #2 ranked Rebels held the leads during the opening quarter, getting scoring production from more than just MCAC leading scorer Brittany Adrian. Adrian was held scoreless by the Blazers in the opening quarter and had her only field goal in the game in the second quarter, ending the game with a mere 4 points.Regular season Most Valuable Player Christie Anne McCullough, who would be selected Tournament MVP at the conclusion of the final, was also held in check by the Rebels in the opening quarter managing only a three-point field goal in the opening ten minutes. But the fifth-year point guard produced more than just points for the Blazers. „Christie Anne spread the ball around and really helped balance our scoring tonight, „said first-year head coach Alex Leaver. „It is hard to stop us when we have lots of players scoring.‰ CMU had just that on Saturday night. The Blazers ended the half with a 30-18 lead and an effective press in the second half allowed CMU to put the Rebels completely off their offensive game.
A fantastic accomplishment in a conference championship, CMU would get scoring from every player on the roster. McCullough, Tamara Andjelovic and Jaime Semchuk each collected 12 points to lead all scorers. Mallory Shack and Anneke Hildebrand would deliver 8 points in the win. The Championship was sweet for the returning players as CMU fell to Red River in the conference final a year ago on Red River‚s home court. Hildebrand and McCullough were both honored on Saturday afternoon at the MCAC Awards Banquet with selections to the All-Conference team, along with Red River‚s Adrian and Karie Magpantay and Sonia Radi and Jill Reimer from Providence College.
