Academic Scholarships for New, Returning, and Transfer Students

Academic Entrance Scholarships are given to full-time students on the basis of academic achievement in high school. No application for these scholarships is necessary.

Criteria: First-year students entering CMU Undergraduate on-campus programs who have completed high school within the previous five years and have completed no more than nine credit hours at another post-secondary institution. Students must be Canadian citizen or equivalent to qualify.

Students whose application material (application form, relevant official transcript, and application fee) has been received by February 28 will receive scholarships as follows:

From 95–100%: $3,000
From 90–94.9%: $2,000
From 85–89.9%: $1,000

Approved course list for calculating the scholarship average

The percentage will be calculated on the basis of the top five approved courses taken in Senior 3 or Grade 11. Of the five approved courses, at least one must be an English course and one must be a math or science.

Students who are awarded an Academic Entrance Scholarship based on Senior 3 or Grade 11 marks must successfully complete high school and meet CMU entrance requirements on approved Senior 4 or Grade 12 courses. If the average percentage calculated on Grade 12 or Senior 4 marks used to meet entrance requirements is higher than the average calculated on grade 11 or Senior 3 marks, the award will be revised upward, if it is lower, the award will be revised downward.

An average percentage on marks of approved Senior 4 or Grade 12 courses used to meet CMU academic entrance scholarship requirements will be used to assess scholarship eligibility for students who have already completed Grade 12 when they apply to CMU.

The following applies to all Entrance Scholarships:

It will be possible to defer your scholarship as long as you still meet the Academic Entrance Scholarship requirements (i.e. you have not been out of high school for more than five years, you have not completed more than nine credit hours at another post-secondary institution).
Students who have completed the Outtatown program are eligible for Academic Entrance Scholarships, provided that they are not transferring more than the eighteen credit hours from the Outtatown program. Calculations for Academic Entrance Scholarships for Outtatown graduates will be based on their Senior 4 or Grade 12 courses.
The full amount of each Academic Entrance Scholarship will be awarded, provided the recipient is registered at CMU for 12 or more credit hours of courses per term. Students registered for less than 12 credit hours per term are not considered full-time students for scholarship purposes and as such are not eligible to receive any Entrance Scholarship. (For the purposes of calculation, courses registered by the student at another university will not be included in this calculation of credit hours unless the student demonstrates successfully that the courses are required for their program.)
Students who plan to begin their CMU studies in January and whose application materials have been received between September 1 and November 30 are eligible for academic entrance scholarships. Students whose average percentage on five Senior 4 (Grade 12) final marks for approved courses is 85% or higher will receive an academic entrance scholarship. The award will be given to students during two consecutive semesters and divided equally for each semester.
Scholarships are applied to the student's tuition fees in two equal installments (September and January).

Transfer Students – Entrance Scholarship

Academic entrance awards are also given to transfer students who are transferring from eligible Canadian university or college programs. Transfer students are eligible to receive an Entrance Scholarship based on their previous academic achievement.

Scholarships are based on the cumulative GPA attained at their previous institution over a minimum of 18 credit hours.
Students need not apply for these awards, but must submit CMU application requirements by November 30 if applying for Winter semester and by May 31 if applying for Fall semester.
The scholarship amount will be $1,000 for a CGPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.5 scale or 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The award will be given to students during two consecutive semesters and divided equally for each semester.
Transfer students starting in January must submit CMU application requirements by November 30 to be eligible for this scholarship.
Students beginning at CMU with a previously completed degree elsewhere are not eligible for this award.

Returning Student - Academic Excellence Scholarships

Academic Excellence Scholarships for Returning Students worth $1,000 are awarded at the end of each academic year and are based on academic performance. Full-time students who complete 12 credit hours in each of the fall and winter semesters and who achieve a minimum GPA of 3.8 over those semesters will be considered for this award. Students in a four-year program, should they meet the requirements, will be eligible to be offered this scholarship for the three years after completing their first year of studying at CMU. In other words, a student will not be eligible for consideration for the Academic Excellence/Highest GPA scholarships after their fourth year of studying at CMU. Students in a three-year program will be considered for this scholarship for the two years after completing their first year of studying at CMU. Scholarships are credited to students’ accounts for tuition and other fees in two equal instalments in September and January. No application is necessary.

Highest GPA Awards

In place of the Academic Excellence Scholarship an award of $2,000 will be given to the student with the highest GPA in the following areas: Year One program, Business or Communications Major, Humanities or Biblical and Thological Studies Major, Social Sciences or Sciences Major, Music program (highest $2,500, second highest $1,500). The qualifications and years of eligibility are the same as for the Academic Excellence Scholarship.
