New practicum opportunities for CRS and IDS students

In 2014, Ruth Taronno, MSC's Director of Practicum, travelled to Ghana to explore potential practicum opportunities for conflict resolution and international development students. As a result of the trip, practicum opportunities are available for students at the organizations listed below.

Contact Ruth Taronno by February 15, 2015 if you are interested in completing a spring practicum with one of these organizations. Travel funding is available.

Location: Asamankese

The program focuses on girls programming for empowerment and leadership training, as well as some community economic development initiatives. The student would live with a host family in the small town of Asamankese, two hours outside of Accra. This placement is suitable for both CRS and IDS students. Costs: $140/week plus a $500 donation.

iDE (International Development Enterprises)

Location: Main offices in Accra

iDe works in agriculture and the students would be involved in marketing and development for farmers, business plans, and farming as a business. While some business background or courses would be helpful, this is not essential.  Costs: Small room and board fees.

Osu Children's Library Fund

This well-established children’s library fund was started in 1990 by Winnipeger Kathy Knowles and has expanded to include numerous libraries and literacy programs. The student would get experience working with children’s literacy programs in both Accra and rural areas. Costs: $150/ week room and board plus a $2000 donation to the organization.

Location: Main office in Accra

This is a medium sized education policy research institute whose main researcher, Dr. Casely-Hayford is a Canadian academic. Practicum students must be willing to volunteer for 9 months (January to August) and have strong writing skills. Previous international experience is also required. This practicum would be suitable for CRS or IDS students interested in pursuing graduate studies. Costs: Approximately $150/week for room and board.
