Class Instruction

Composition

Studies in the techniques of musical composition. We will hone your fluency in composition through music theory, audio production, instrumentation, score study, and critical listening from a wide variety of genres and types of ensembles, helping you create original compositions which express yourself and connect with others. Familiarity with staff notation, rudiments of music theory, and facility with an instrument strongly encouraged.

Summer Theory Boot Camp

This two week intensive class prepares incoming Canadian Mennonite University students for their written theory entrance exams and first-year theory courses.

Class minimum: 5 students.

Date and Time: Monday–Friday, 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Dates: August 19–30, 2024 *theory entrance test will take place during last class

Class Instruction

Thorough Theory Class (Rudiments)

This stimulating group course is designed to prepare high school band, choir, and solo musicians for further musical studies. A comprehensive survey of theory, including aural and keyboard skills, will be offered. Students who complete the course will be prepared for Grade 8 Royal Conservatory of Music or equivalent theory exams and university entrance theory tests. In addition, students will establish a strong foundation of theory, aural, and keyboard skills to enhance vocal or instrumental performance and university level music studies. The course welcomes students whatever their previous experience with formal theory instruction.

Class minimum: 4 students.

Dates: January 30, February 6, 13. 20, 27, March 6, 13, 20, 27, April 10, 17, 24. Makeup date: May 1, 2025. *theory entrance test will take place during last class
