OCTOBER BLAZER ATHLETES OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to Abigail Graff of the women’s soccer team and to Hassan Kamara of the men’s soccer team on being selected as the October Blazer Athletes of the Month.

Abby led CMU to their first MCAC women’s soccer championship in five years, when the defeated Providence 3-2 on October 25th. The second-year midfielder from Calgary, Alberta, recorded a goal and an assist in the gold medal match and was subsequently named tournament MVP.
Hassan led the CMU men’s team to a 3-3 record in October, scoring 3 goals and setting up 5 others, including a goal and two assists in their 4-2 conference semi-final victory over CU St-Boniface on October 24th.

CMU ADVANCES TO MEN’S SOCCER FINAL

Hassan Kamara scored once and set up two others as the #2 ranked CMU Blazers men’s soccer team defeated C.U. St-Boniface on Saturday afternoon by a score of 4-2 at Providence College in Otterburne, host of the 2009 MCAC Soccer Championship. The two teams split results in the regular season, the Voyageurs winning at CMU in September 3-1 and CMU returning the favor in October in St. Boniface, 5-2.

Illness was the story of the first half for both teams. Within the first 20 minutes CMU was forced to replace Stefan Dyck and Joel Peters both unable to continue because of flu-like symptoms. CU suffered a similar loss forced to bring Aboubacar Camara as a substitute goalkeeper when their first-choice became ill. The spotlight fell on Camara shortly after his induction, when CMU’s Kamara sent Dave Isbister in on goal. The rushing CU keeper was neatly avoided by Isbister as he tucked the ball under the bar to put the Blazers ahead.

Morrisanda Kaba equalized for the #3 ranked Voyageurs in minute 40, blasting in a rebound after CMU’s Jean-Michel Ngenzi made a brilliant save off Papa Hane’s shot. Before the referee could blow the half-time whistle, defender Mike Harms lifted the Blazers back into the lead when he hammered Kamara’s corner kick into the roof of the CU goal.

As soon as the second half kicked-off, Kamara had put the Blazers up two. After dribbling around the last defender and slipping past Camara, the first-year striker blasted the ball into the Voyaguer goal much to the delight of the supporters. With ten minutes remaining, Ibrahima Kamite would return hope to CU, before Isbister picked up his second goal in the 83rd minute to ice it for CMU.

“I was thrilled with the play of our team today ” stated a relieved head coach Russell Willms. “there were a number of players that made a huge contribution today.” Dean Dueck was voted CMU’s Man of the Match for his tireless work in the midfield. Jesse Matties and Adam Closs replaced the two ill Blazer starters and both excelled when called on by their coach. “Our scorer’s scored, our defenders defended and for the most part the goalkeeper kept the ball out”, said Willms. “That is all you can ask for.”

The Blazers will now advance to Sunday’s final against #1 Providence College who eliminated Steinbach Bible College in style on Saturday 10-1. Sunday’s men’s final will kick-off in Otterburne at 4pm.

GIESBRECHT'S LIFT PROVIDENCE TO VICTORY

Andry Giesbrecht scored twice and Mario Giesbrecht once on Saturday afternoon as Providence defended their home pitch against CMU by a score of 3-1. It was Mario who was the first to beat CMU goalkeeper Jean-Michel Ngenzi resulting from Andry's free kick. The Blazers drew level late in the half on a similar play. Hassan Kamara's corner kick was pushed into the Providence goal by CMU captain Jeff Klassen.

Fresh off a senior men's national championship with Winnipeg's Hellas, Andry Giesbrecht displayed his pedigree in the second half. First, Andry turned Klassen and his left-footed rocket zipped past Ngenzi in the 65th minute. Seven minutes later, Andry skipped through defenders and collected his brace, completing the day's scoring.

With the win, Providence claims top seed entering the final tournament. They will end their regular season on Sunday at St-Boniface. CMU will begin preparing for their conference semi-final with the Voyageurs to be played in Otterburne next Saturday afternoon.

BLAZERS WIN AT WHITTIER PARK

Jean Michel Ngenzi scored twice to pace the CMU men's soccer team to a 5 - 2 away victory over C. U. St-Boniface at Whittier Park on Friday afternoon. "A victory like this is massive for us as we approach the conference tournament," explained a pleased Blazer coach Russell Willms. "We will try to go into Providence tomorrow and get a result as well, and hopefully bring some confidence with us into next weekend."

Hassan Kamara opened the scoring for the Blazers slotting a right-footed shot past Voyaguers starting keeper Miguel Chaput from a tidy attack produced on the left wing. Ngenzi would put the Blazers up two goals six minutes later when Chaput spilled a rocket-volley from the boot of Chris Epp-Tiessen. Right-back Mike Harms collected his first goal at the 31 minute mark, pushing the ball across the line on a scramble in front of the St-Boniface goal.

The Voyageurs would have a chance to make a game of it when Tarik El Assail earned a penalty kick after being brought down in the area by Josh Reimer in the 42 minute. Morissanda Kaba promptly stepped to the spot and kicked the ball off the Blazer goalpost as CMU keeper Jason Feick watched and wished it wide.

CU was eager to right the ship when the teams kicked off the second half. Defender Mario Dupont put the Voyageurs on the scoresheet five minutes in - a goal that seemed to lift his team. The momentum was short-lived. An attempted clearance by St-Boniface would be kicked off of Jean Fillion and wind up behind the CU keeper, to restore the 3 goal CMU lead.

The best two goals of the game would be saved for the final 30 minutes. A skillful individual effort from Cheikh Bamba Sow in the 64 minute brought CU back within two goals, before Ngenzi would seal the deal for the Blazers eight minutes later when a powerful goal from 25 yards cut into the upper corner of the St-Boniface goal.

The break for CMU will be extremely short, as they travel to Otterburne to close out their season with the first-place Providence Freemen.

KAMARA IGNITES BLAZERS TO HOME WIN

First-year midfielder Hassan Kamara scored once and set up two others as the Blazers won their final home game of the season by a score of 3 – 0 against Steinbach Bible College. Jean-Michel Ngenzi opened the scoring for CMU just four minutes into the contest when he tapped in his first MCAC goal created from the feet of Kamara. Eighteen minutes later, Kamara would put the Blazers two to the good when he received a pass from Josh Reimer and blasted in a right-footed rocket from 20 yards out.

Credit to the Flames who looked the better of the two teams as the half came to a close. Armando Reyes narrowly missed lifting SBC back into the game when his shot in the 37th minute flew over the crossbar. In fact, SBC collected 5 corner kicks in the final 10 minutes of the half but were unable to beat Michael Rutherford who was given his second start of the 2009 season.

Chances in the second half were also quite even. Flames goalkeeper Josh Friesen foiled Kamara on two separate occasions that the African-born midfielder had opportunities to finish in the final 45 minutes. CMU would put the game out of reach in the 83rd minute, when Geoff Reimer scored his second goal of the season when like Ngenzi was the beneficiary of Kamara’s ability to create goals.

The Blazers will travel to St. Boniface to take on CUSB on Saturday afternoon at Whittier Park before closing out their MCAC season away in Otterburne where they will face Providence on October 17th.

PROVIDENCE RECORDS AWAY WIN AT CMU

Providence goalkeeper Brennan White's penalty save in the 32nd minute of the first half from the right foot of CMU's Hassan Kamara, shifted the tide for the Freemen and pushed them on to a 3 - 1 victory on Saturday afternoon at CMU.

The Blazers opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Josh Reimer's long throw-in was plugged home by Geoff Reimer. Providence equalized 8 minutes later when Mario Giesbrecht capitalized on a miscommunication between a CMU defender and goalkeeper Jason Feick. The referee awarded the Blazers a penalty kick near the end of the half for a hand ball. Kamara kick was knocked down and collected by White, leaving Kamara and CMU on the back foot when the referees whistle sounded to signal the end of the half.

Providence emerged from their half-time talk eager to claim the lead. Center half Tory Walker headed the Freemen to a 2 - 1 lead when he converted a cross served in by Miguel Fictoria. Providence would go ahead by two goals 4 minutes later when a cross from Fictoria created problems in the Blazers goalmouth and ended up in the CMU goal.

The final 30 minutes of the game were highlighted with passionate tackling and a few careless challenges. Two Providence players were booked on separate occasions; Colin Hamm and Giancarlo Calla. "In all we were happy with our performance," explained Blazers head coach Russell Willms. "we created scoring opportunities but we must learn to continue to create the changes that we did in the opening 30 minutes for the duration of the game."

Providence will return home to face the undefeated CUSB Voyageurs on Sunday afternoon, while CMU will host Steinbach in the mid-week.

St. Boniface Spoil Blazer Home Debut

The College Universitaire de St-Boniface Voyageurs took three valuable away points from the Blazers on Homecoming Weekend at CMU, winning by a final score of 3 - 1.

College opened the scoring in the 8th minute when 2008 MCAC all-conference selection Papa Hane cut open the Blazer defense before side-footing his final touch past CMU goalkeeper Jason Feick. Five minutes later, CMU came close to equalizing. Jean-Michel Ngenzi's cross found a wide-open Geoff Reimer, whose free header went inches wide of the Voyageur goal.

In the 34th minute Hane was back on the offensive, setting up Mohhamed Bouyoud for his first goal of the season. Two CMU chances in the final moments of the half kept the CMU crowd hopeful - first, when Adam Janzen's right-footed volley went wide right, and then when Hassan Kamara came within inches of scoring on a 30-yard left-footed effort.

The scoring problems continued in the second half for CMU, as chance after chance were foiled by goalkeeper Aboubacar Camara and the Voyageur defenders. College scored a third goal in the 79th minute, a dipping 25 yard volley off the right foot of Morissanda Kaba dipped over Feick and into the Blazer goal.

The Blazers would ruin Camara's clean sheet in the 84th minute when Hassan Kamara converted from the penalty spot. Kamara earned the penalty when he was taken down by Aboubakrine Mbaye in the area.

The result was the first win of the season for CUSB (1-0-0) and evens CMU's record to (1-1-0). The Blazers travel to Winkler on Sunday afternoon for friendly with the Winkler Storm of the MMSL's premier division and will host Scotia United of the first division on Wednesday at 6 pm.

BLAZERS FALL 4 - 2 TO GRANITE UNITED

In their final friendly game before their 2009 MCAC home debut against College Universitaire de St-Boniface on Saturday afternoon, the CMU men's soccer team allowed four second half goals to fall 4 - 2 to Granite on Wednesday evening.

"We weren't disappointed with the performance", explained CMU head coach Russell Willms. "There were specific things that we wanted to work on tonight and this game provided us an opportunity to do that."

2nd year forward Dave Isbister continued to produce goals for the Blazers, scoring both CMU goals in the first half. In the 4th minute, Isbister displayed his finishing touch, flicking Stefan Dyck's cross over the Granite goalkeeper and putting CMU a goal to the good. His second followed 20 minutes later, when Patrice Leclercq's clearance rebounded off the goalpost and Isbister poached his brace.

CMU allowed the Manitoba Major Soccer League side an opportunity to get back into the game and Granite did just that. Goals in the 55th, 70th, 83rd and 89th minute by Kyle Danino, Devin Johnson, Chris Dixon and John Boudreau sealed the Blazers fate and disappointed the spectators.

"Credit to Granite," Willms stated after the game, "they finished on their chances in the half and they created more opportunities than we did. We will learn that if we want to get a result we will need to put in an honest effort over 90 minutes. St. Boniface will be a big test for us on Saturday."

Isbister goal-scoring prowess has been the stories of the first two weeks of the season. In the 3 games that Isbister has appeared in, he has scored multiple goals in each and is currently on seven goals for the season. He and the Blazers will host their conference home opener on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm.

CMU BEATS SBC IN OPENER

Six first-half goals were more than enough for the CMU Blazers to pick up three valuable away points against Steinbach Bible College on Wednesday afternoon. Second-year center forward Dave Isbister scored three of the Blazers goals, all courtesy of the long-throw service by Josh Reimer. Reimer and Isbister combined for much of the Blazers offense in 2008 and it didn't take the two long to synchronize versus SBC when the Blazers opened the scoring in the 7th minute.

Blazer captain, Jeff Klassen converted the third CMU goal when he headed home Adam Janzen's corner kick. An SBC own goal put the Blazers four to the good, before a third goal came from Isbister's head and a 42nd minute penalty kick by Hassan Kamara rounded out the first half scoring.

"I am definitely happy to see us convert on our set-plays", said head coach Russell Willms "we certainly aren't all the way to where we want to be, but we are growing and learning to play with each other. It was great to see Josh and Dave pick up where they left off last season."

The majority of the second half chances belonged to the Blazers, however it was SBC who came closest to goal. SBC midfielder Dominik Bergen's launched a powerful volley in the 83rd minute that seemed destined to dip over CMU goalkeeper Jason Feick. But Feick preserved his team's clean sheet extending to deflect the blast over the crossbar and to safety.

The next action for CMU is Wednesday, September 23rd when they host Granite FC of the Manitoba Major Soccer League.

Blazers Fall 4-2 in Alumni Challenge

mens soccerThe Blazers men's soccer team kicked off the 2009 season at home on Saturday afternoon, losing 4-2 to the CMU Alumni. Mike Neufeldt opened the scoring for the old boys converting a scoring opportunity created by Brad Sheerer in the seventh minute. Sheerer would continue to be the danger man for the Alumni, scoring two goals of his own in the second half, at the 54th and 86th minute.

2nd year forward Dave Isbister picked up where he finished the '08 season, scoring both goals for the Blazers. His first came on a counter-attack in the 41st minute when Jeff Klassen's pass sent him in on goal. The tally brought the teams level at the halftime whistle. Isbister collected his brace in the 90th minute when he headed home his second goal from Hassan Kamara's free kick.

"It was a good first effort for us", commented head coach Russell Willms. "We were a step behind and rushed the play at times, but in all I am not unhappy with the game. It was the first time that this team has played together and it will take us a little time to find our cohesiveness and overall form."

CMU Scores Local Soccer Star

The CMU Men’s soccer program announced today, the commitment of Bonivital goal-scorer Hassan Kamara for the 2009 season. Kamara carries an impressive soccer resume that boasts many team and individual awards. He has been involved in the provincial program since 2004 where he won a gold medal at the Western Canada Games in 2007. In 2008, Kamara won the Golden Boot Award for the most goals scored in the National Club Finals in Toronto.

“Hassan brings to our program a lot of experience and ability and I fully expect him to make instant impact on our program and our conference,” stated CMU Head Coach Russell Willms. This August, Kamara and team Manitoba hope to bring home a medal when they participate in the 2009 Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island.

2009 ID Camp Saturday August 4th 2009

The CMU Blazers men’s soccer team is pleased to host their 2009 Identification Camp on Saturday, August 8th at the Shaftesbury Campus south-side soccer field. The sessions are open to players that hope to play on the varsity men’s team this fall as well as those entering Grades 11 and 12 in September.

“The progress of our soccer program and our growing league is an exciting thing to be a part of”, says head coach Russell Willms, who is preparing for his second season at the helm of the CMU men’s team. The Blazers compete in the Manitoba Colleges Athletics Association: a provincial intercollegiate sports conference that is preparing a bid to join the Canadian Colleges Athletics Association (CCAA) in 2010. “We are striving to provide Manitoban soccer players with an opportunity to train and play at a university-level without having to leave the province.”

Willms worked as an assistant coach with the University of Manitoba women’s soccer program in its inaugural season in interuniversity sports play. “It was an exciting time for women’s soccer in Manitoba when the Bisons first entered the CIS,” he comments, “It has become a goal that Manitoba girls can shoot for and I hope that CMU can provide a similar opportunity for our Manitoba boys.”

Registration will begin at 9:45 am with the first skill session beginning at 10:00 am. The final session will conclude at 1:00 pm. To pre-register email head coach, Russell Willms at rwillms@cmu.ca
