Werner grew up in Winnipeg and received a B.A. (Religion/Philosophy) from the University of Manitoba in 1979; a B.Th. from Canadian Mennonite Bible College, also in 1979; and an M.Div. from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries in 1981.

Werner has been at CMBC/CMU since 1986, first working in the Admissions Office, then in Student Life and since 2000, as Director of Practica. Before this he taught at Swift Current (Saskatchewan) Bible Institute (1981-86).

In his spare time, Werner enjoys playing squash, carpentry work, swimming and boating, as well as crossword puzzles.

Werner and his wife, Marilyn, have four sons. He is a member of Charleswood Mennonite Church.
