Preparing For A Career In Nursing

Download an information sheet,

A year or two of study at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) could prepare you to meet the entrance requirements for a baccalaureate program in nursing. This page explains what you must complete if you wish to continue studies at the University of Manitoba to earn the Bachelor of Nursing. If you intend to continue studies at some other university, similar possibilities exist. However, it is important that you inquire about admission and
program requirements at the university you are considering and that you work with the Coordinator of Student Advising at CMU to construct a
program of studies at CMU that will achieve your objectives.

If you intend to apply to the Bachelor of Nursing program at the University of Manitoba, you can begin with studies at CMU and apply to the degree
program at the University of Manitoba. This page presents the basic admission requirements and explains what you must complete if you wish to
move directly into the second year of the nursing program.

During your time at CMU, it will be necessary to take at least two courses from the University of Manitoba (UM). They are highlighted below
in UPPERCASE LETTERS. These courses are offered by UM at CMU, but require the student to register for them through UM as a “visiting
student.”

Students must achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.50 with no grade lower than “C” to become eligible for admission to the Faculty of
Nursing. However, admission is on a competitive basis, and normally students must earn a much higher average to compete successfully.
Contact the Coordinator of Student Advising for the most recent information on the GPA requirements.

To become eligible for admission to the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Manitoba, you must complete one of the following two options:

Option # 1:
Complete all the required credit hours including the following with a minimum grade of “C” in each course and a GPA of at least 2.5:

If you apply to the Faculty of Nursing under Option #1, you will spread the requirements over two years at CMU and take MATH 1000 (Basic Statistical Analysis) and other upperlevel electives which will be required in later years in the Nursing program. The advantages of this approach is that you will be able to have a slightly lighter load in the first two years, achieve better grades, participate in the CMU community, and work ahead at subsequent Nursing requirements.

Example of 2 years at CMU to qualify for Option 2:

First Term – Year One

BTS-1110 Introduction to Biblical Literature & Themes (meets Humanities & written English requirement)
BIOL1360 Anatomy & Lab BIOL-1370 Physiology & Lab
Introduction to Psychology OR Sociology
NURS-1260 HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

First Term – Year Two

BIOL-1350 Microbiology
Additional Science
BTS-2000 Introduction to Christianity or BTS-2550 History of Christianity or BTS 2720 Third World Theology

Second Term – Year One

Additional Science
Introductory Psychology OR Sociology
General elective

Second Term – Year Two
General Elective at 2000 level
NURS-1280 INTRODUCTION TO NURSING
MATH-1000 Basic Statistical Analysis

Option # 2:
Complete at least 30 credit hours of university level coursework with a minimum GPA of 2.5 based on the most recent 60 hours. The
courses taken should include 3 credit hours of 1000-level English and three credit hours of 1000-level science with a minimum of “C” grade in each.
Students should be aware that to be admitted under option # 2, their GPA will need to be significantly higher than under option # 1.

Example of a qualifying year at CMU for Option 2:

First Term

Second Term

NOTE: If you register at CMU according to this example, you would apply to the Faculty of Nursing under Option 2. You could qualify to move directly into the second year of the Bachelor of Nursing program if you completed one additional science course during the spring session.
