Preparing for a Career in Social Work
Download an information sheet
A year or two of study at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) could prepare you to meet the entrance requirements for a baccalaureate program in social work. This page explains what you must complete if you wish to continue studies at the University of Manitoba for the Bachelor of Social Work. If you intend to pursue studies at some other university, similar possibilities exist. However, it is important that you inquire about admission and program requirements at the university you are considering and that you work with the assistant dean at CMU to construct a program of studies at CMU that will achieve your objectives.
If you intend to earn the Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Manitoba, you can begin your studies at CMU and complete the degree program at the University of Manitoba without adding to the time it would take if you were to go directly to the University of Manitoba.
Students must achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.50 to become eligible for admission to the Faculty of Social Work. However, admission is on a competitive basis, and normally students must earn a higher average to compete successfully.
To become eligible for admission to the Faculty of Social Work, you must complete any 30 credit hours of university level courses. Note that courses to fulfil the writing and math requirements should be completed within the first 60 credit hours of the degree.
Alternatively, if you complete 51 credit hours of general university studies with a minimum GPA of 3.0, you may apply for admission to the third year of the Bachelor of Social Work program. Then you will require two more years to complete the program at the University of Manitoba.
The following chart represents a sample first-year registration for students preparing for admission to the Faculty of Social Work. There are many other possibilities for a first year registration. CMU’s Coordinator of Student Advising will be available to provide registration advising.
