As a Custodian, you will be responsible for maintaining assigned campus spaces and buildings in a clean, safe, and welcoming condition, supporting CMU's commitment to providing an exceptional experience for students, faculty, staff, guests, conference participants, and event clients. The successful candidate will be adaptable, self-motivated, and capable of working independently while upholding high standards of cleanliness, safety, and customer service.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
General Duties
- Daily cleaning duties throughout campus buildings include:
- Vacuum floors in designated areas
- Clean and sanitize washrooms
- Sweep and wash floors
- Empty garbage, recycling, and compost
- Wash window surfaces
- Wipe tables and desks
- When assigned to residence facilities, clean and prepare common areas and guest accommodations.
- Provide occasional support for event-related set-up, teardown, and room resets.
- Evening building walkthroughs and campus lock-up procedures.
- General upkeep of custodial storage areas and equipment.
Seasonal Maintenance Duties
- Clear entrances, walkways, stairways, and emergency exits of snow and ice during winter months.
- Monitor entrances and pedestrian routes for icy conditions and take appropriate safety measures.
- Apply ice melt and assist with maintaining safe access to campus buildings.
- Sweep leaves, dirt, and other debris from entrances, sidewalks, courtyards, and outdoor gathering areas.
- Assist with floor stripping, waxing, refinishing, and restoration projects.
- Perform floor waxing and restoration projects during summer and other low-occupancy periods.
- Support campus preparation and cleanup activities related to seasonal changes, conferences, special events, and summer accommodations.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Duties may take place in a variety of campus environments, including academic buildings, residence facilities, event spaces, and common areas. This role is well suited to individuals who value schedule flexibility and are comfortable working a range of shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional shifts that extend until midnight.

- Successful candidates must be willing to complete and satisfactorily pass a Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check as a condition of employment.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to move tables, chairs, and event equipment.
- Ability to work across multiple campus buildings.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
