CMU Blazers

BLAZERS ARE TOO HOT TO HANDLE

The CMU women’s volleyball team kept their perfect MCAC season intact in a straight-set victory over second place Red River College on Saturday night, winning by scores of 25-15, 26-24, 25-19. Without the services of setter Kathleen Vitt, the 8-0 Blazers were led by first-year Kristy Hugill who again showed herself to be a very capable in her ability to distribute. Dara Friesen and Evelyn Kampen received the majority of Hugill’s sets were were both extremely efficient in their attacks. Kampen led the Blazers with 12 kills on 13 attempts and Friesen finished with 9 kills on 16 attempts and added a block.

The Blazers found themselves in an unfamiliar situation in the second set. Head coach Andrea Charbonneau was twice forced to call timeouts at 3-8 and 22-23, as the Rebels had CMU on the ropes. The experienced attacking of Friesen and Kampen along with consistent serving eventually allowed CMU middle Breanne Giesbrecht to serve for the set, which she finished emphatically with an ace. Giesbrecht finished with 3 kills and 2 stuff blocks to lead CMU in the category for the match. For the Rebels, Carley Dupuis finished with 6 kills while Jesse Arnason picked up 4 blocks. A POWERFUL OPPONENT

The Blazers dropped a straight-set loss to league-leading Red River on Saturday night by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 25-20. Though disappointed with the final scores, the Blazers showed consistent play and were even in play with the undefeated Rebels for most of the match. Todd Reimer led the way for CMU with 9 kills and Peter Dueck added 6 kills and 2 blocks. In a strategic move, head coach Mark Kliewer moved Paul Peters to play left side and Peters displayed his athleticism and versatility in picking up 7 kills. Josh Krueger added 3 stuff blocks for CMU in the loss.

This week, CMU will play an exhibition series with Providence College – hosting the Freemen on Wednesday night at 7 pm, and travelling to Otterburne for round two on Friday night. The Freemen defeated the Blazers in their previous meetings last semester and CMU hopes to draw level with their southern opponents with successful performances this week. Providence has committed to return to MCAC conference volleyball play in Fall 2010, and this challenge is sure to be noteworthy as the games take on more meaning in the coming year. ACC TAKES THE UPPER HAND

With first-place in the conference on the line, CMU and Assiniboine Community College played a home-and-home series last weekend on Friday and Saturday night. Entering their first game in 2010, the Blazers expected to be a bit rusty when they took the ice at the Brandon Sportsplex on Friday. Mike Friesen put the Blazers in the lead when he scored an unassisted goal 5 minutes before the end of the period. However, in the final minutes of the frame, the Cougars would steal two goals back and enter the intermission with a one goal lead. Three second period ACC goals had the Blazers looking for answers. Dan Cochrane, Joran Hedley and Joel Strachan were the scorers for the Cougars. After some line-juggling, CMU cut the lead to 6-2 when Marty Siemens scored from Friesen and David Epp. The Cougars put the game away with two more goals in the final 17 minutes to defeat the Blazers 8-2.

The lop-sided score in Brandon set the stage for a heated affair on Saturday night in St. Adolphe. Four first period goals by ACC left CMU attempting to claw back into the game when the teams started the second period, and that is just what the Blazers did. As tempers boiled over from the previous night battle and the uneven score, between the second period skirmishes and penalties, the CMU powerplay unit that includes Siemens, Geoff Reimer and Ethan Heidebrecht got the Blazers on the board. Reimer would score a second goal for CMU near the end of the second period to counter ACC’s fifth goal of the game, scored 2:24 before the second intermission. Trailing 5-2 in the third, CMU managed to pull within a goal with 1:33 left on the clock when Reimer scored his second of the night from George Dyck III, but the goaltending of Dylan Funk would not allow CMU an equalizer.

The two wins secures top-spot in the conference for Assiniboine and leave CMU to battle C. U. de St-Boniface in the semi-finals to be played in Souris, Manitoba on February 19th.

PRESSURE WIN FOR BLAZERS BASKETBALL

In a battle for first place in the MCAC women’s basketball standings, CMU pounded Red River 83-46 on Friday night to claim the top seed. The Blazers erupted for 19 first quarter points, holding the Rebels to a mere 5 thanks in large part to a swarming full-court press. “We knew that they didn’t have a true point guard and we decided to take advantage of that,” explained head coach Alex Leaver. Fifth-year guard Christie Anne McCullough scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half, capitalizing on the turnovers that she and her teammates created. In a rare start, first-year guard Anneke Hildebrand scored a game-high 17 in the CMU win and reigning MCAC Female Athlete of the Week Mallory Shack pushed in 15 points, including a 3-pointer. Brittany Adrian led Red River with 16 points, all scored in the second half.

In other action this weekend, Providence College picked up their first win of the season defeating Red River 46-42 on 15 points from guard Melanie Warkentin. Red River will meet CMU again on Saturday afternoon at home after suffering two consecutive losses.

BLAZERS HOWL IN WIN OVER WOLFPACK

The Blazers didn’t waste any time getting back on track when the beat Oak Hills Christian College on Saturday afternoon 95-29. Once and powerful MCAC opponent, the visitors from Bemidji, Minnesota had showed little athleticism or experience and were out-played in all areas by the Blazers. Paul Muns scored 27 and Kevin Quirante added 21 for CMU in the win. Of note, Dane Cameron made is home debut for CMU, recovering from an ankle injury that has kept him out of action since Thanksgiving Weekend. He finished with the game with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Marc Badiou and Dave Smith rounded out the double-figure Blazers, scoring 15 and 10 points respectively. (Photo by Philip Navoa)
