President's Message

Welcome Message

As I begin my tenure as CMU's second president I am honoured and made bold by the reams of generous encouragement that has come my way. Most of this isn't really about me but rather gives witness to all the people who are engaged and made hopeful by what's been happening at CMU. The enthusiasm is for what's ever becoming possible through CMU the co-mingling of the particular programs, projects, faculty and students entrusted to CMU. I just happen to be the one who acts as host – point person it's usually called – between the internal workings and the external relationships that sustain and urge forward the university's mission and effectiveness.

One of the things I find most heartening about CMU students is their capacity to transfer and translate what they learn in one context into radically different situations. One student recently told me about some of the spin-off benefits of CMU's Outtatown program within the mix of a 4yr. BA in International Development Studies at CMU, including how living in close community with non-family members opened her eyes to perceiving dynamics of interdependence in global politics. Another student (actually, a recent grad) talked about gaining acceptance – with honours – to a graduate program in one of the world's leading universities within a different area from what she studied at CMU; she believes that this dream became possible through the depth and range of synthesis that she engaged daily at CMU. Other students and alumni spoke of cooperative businesses that they've started up and are running with success, and of how studies at CMU nurtured their capacity to imagine something that's not already there and to make it happen.

CMU is rooted in a heritage of people for whom the love of God, of learning, of the land and indeed all of life's dimensions are by calling and confession inter-related. And CMU goes about university education throughout the breadth of its programs by fostering the inter-connectedness scholarly rigour, faithfulness to God, relationships of trust, and a generous imagination.

I invite you to peruse the CMU website, whether you're checking into possibility of becoming a student, a staff member, an attendee at CMU public events, or an interested and supportive friend of the university. Regardless of which category, we'd love to hear from you and see you sometime. You're always welcome.
