Transfer Students

CMU welcomes transfer students from a range of post-secondary institutions. Whether you've completed one semester of studies or an entire degree, you'll be welcomed into a supportive academic community where you can continue your post-secondary journey.
Admission and Transcript Requirements
The following admission requirements apply to domestic undergraduate students only. If you are an international student, learn more about international admission requirements here.
- If you have completed fewer than 30 credit hours of post-secondary education:
- You will be assessed for admission based on your high school transcripts. Learn more about high school admission requirements here.
- You are required to submit transcripts from high school and all post-secondary institutions attended.
- If you have completed more than 30 credit hours of post-secondary education:
- You must have a minimum 2.0 GPA for admission.
- You are not required to submit high school transcripts but must submit transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
- If you do not meet either of the requirements listed above, you may be eligible for admission as a mature student. Learn more about mature student admission requirements here.
Please Note: Some programs have specific prerequisite requirements, and CMU may require high school transcripts to demonstrate completion of these prerequisites. Contact your Admissions Counsellor at admissions
To be considered for conditional admission, students can submit unofficial or interim copies of their transcripts. To be considered for final admission, students must submit final official transcripts sent directly from their previous high school and/or post-secondary institution(s) or sent through MyCreds™ to CMU.
Transfer Credit
If you've completed courses at a recognized post-secondary institution (e.g., university, college, Bible college), you may be eligible for transfer credit.
The transfer credit process begins automatically when:
- A domestic transfer student receives admission to CMU
- An international transfer student receives their study permit approval
Every CMU program has residency requirements, meaning students need to complete a certain number of credit hours at CMU to graduate with a CMU degree. Typically, students must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours at CMU to graduate with a three-year undergraduate degree and a minimum of 60 credit hours to graduate with a four-year undergraduate degree. For more information, check with an Academic Advisor.
Please Note: While you may receive transfer credit for previous courses, the transfer credit you receive may or may not meet program requirements at CMU. Transfer students are strongly encouraged to meet with an Academic Advisor to ensure they are on track to meet all program requirements.
Transfer Credit FAQ
When are course syllabi required?
When there is no record of a course transferring from one of your previous post-secondary institutions, a syllabus may be requested to learn more about the content of the course.
If course syllabi are required, you will be contacted via email. It's a good idea to send course syllabi in as soon as possible when asked, so your previous courses can be evaluated before you need to register for classes at CMU.
If you're thinking of transferring to CMU, hang on to the syllabi for the courses you're currently enrolled in. If you do not have old syllabi on hand, you will need to contact your previous post-secondary institution(s) to request them.
What grades are required to receive transfer credit?
For undergraduate programs, a grade of "C" or higher is required to receive transfer credit. For graduate programs, a grade of "B" or higher is requred to receive transfer credit.
Can courses taken more than 10 years ago be transferred?
Courses taken more than 10 years ago may not be eligible for transfer credit. However, they will still be evaluated on a course-by-course basis, and you will be contacted with the results.
How many credits can be transferred?
You can transfer up to 60 credit hours towards a three- or four-year undergraduate degree. Graduate and after-degree programs have different limits. For more information, check with an Academic Advisor.
How is transfer credit awarded?
With support from the academic departments, the Registrar's Office evaluates each of your courses and may award transfer credit in one of three ways:
- Course equivalency - A course is the equivalent of a CMU course
- Unallocated credit - A course is not the equivalent of a CMU course but can still count as a general or elective credit towards your degree
- Block credit - A recognized post-secondary credential or group of related courses transfers together as a group or "block" of credits
Transferring from Institutions that have Agreements with CMU
An articulation agreement is an arrangement between post-secondary institutions that makes it easier for students to transfer courses from one institution to the other. Currently, CMU has agreements with the following institutions:
Bethany College

- The student has completed a minimum of 30 credit hours of course work at Bethany College
- The student has achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher at Bethany and a minimum grade of 'C' in each course.
- The student is choosing a four-year degree program at CMU. If the student chooses a three-year degree program at CMU, the maximum credit-for-credit transfer will be 45 credit hours.
CMU will assess transfer credit for any student who does not meet the criteria listed in the previous paragraph but meets CMU's regular admission requirements according to existing policies regarding transfer of credit.

What Transfer Students Have to Say About CMU
First-Year Communications Student at CMU: "I have found this school to be a wonderful learning environment. The small classroom settings provide a more unique and intimate experience. I have been able to connect with people in my class and approach my professors with questions or concerns I have. The friendly atmosphere and dedication I have seen from my professors shows me that they care about students."
First-Year Business Student at CMU: "The atmosphere at CMU is great. It is easy to make friends due to the small classes. I also like the small classes because the teacher can focus on everyone. At CMU you are not just a student number, but you count as a student. I love that everyone cares about you and tries to help make your university experience as easy-going and enjoyable as possible. I also feel like the smaller classes are helpful in staying focused and have a good influence on personal grades that are achieved in the course."
Second-Year Music Student at CMU: "As a second-year music student who is new to the Mennonite culture, my experience at CMU has been quite positive in many ways, and is getting better all the time. I appreciate more and more that CMU houses a strong and supportive community with a really positive, clean vibe. The profs are awesome and incredibly talented, knowledgeable, and kind. They have high standards of self-discipline and academic rigour, but are also forgiving and understanding. The smaller size of the university means that profs can keep up with their students' needs. Being a student at CMU has been inspirational and pushes me towards intellectual, musical, and spiritual growth."
First-Year Business Student at CMU: "I love the small class sizes at CMU. They are small even in first and second year classes. You get to know your prof, and they know you. I have felt that both faculty and staff care about you, how you are doing academically, but also personally. Profs are willing to help outside of class time if needed. At my previous school I was able to get help, but it was limited, and sometimes felt rushed. To set up a meeting with an advisor took a while sometimes, and they were unable to know your schedule/situation just because they have a lot of students to see. I love that faith is often involved in classes at CMU (even if not a theology course), by the invitation of the prof."
