Leadership Scholarships for New Students

CMU offers four Leadership Scholarships to students who demonstrate significant leadership ability, academic excellence, personal character, service, and vision (maximum value, $14,000–$3,500 per year for up to four years).

To be eligible for a Leadership Scholarship, students must submit an application form and have two nomination forms submitted from individuals closely involved in their particular area of leadership (e.g. teacher, coach, youth leader, pastor, or mentor). Students are also required to submit a detailed résumé and an essay. All applicants for the Leadership Scholarship who do not receive the scholarship will also be considered for one of four Leadership Merit Awards worth $1,000 each for one year. All materials must be submitted no later than February 28. International students and dependents of CMU employees are not eligible for this award.

Eligibility

  • Is completing a high school diploma or has no more than 9 credit hours of post-secondary education.
  • Plans to enroll in full-time studies at CMU (minimum 12 credit hours per semester).
  • Students must have a CMU entrance average of no less than 80%.
  • Current and/or recent past leadership involvement (see below).
  • Is a Canadian citizen, Canadian permanent resident, or refugee.

In order to renew this scholarship each year

  • Annually, write a 1,000-word essay summarizing how you have given leadership at CMU during that year and discussing how you plan to be a leader at CMU in the coming year.
  • Participate in the leadership scholarship mentor program.
  • GPA of 3.5.
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester at CMU.

Please Note: Each year Merit Awards ($1,000–$1,500 per year up to four years) are given to students upon entering CMU. A student may apply for a Leadership Scholarship and also for one or all of the Merit Awards. However, students who are selected for a Leadership Scholarship cannot be selected to receive Merit Awards (Academic, Music, Science, Business, or Athletic).

Application Requirements

Please upload all materials through your application portal.

  1. Submit a detailed résumé. Include the following areas of involvement as they relate to your area of leadership and achievement, starting from your grade ten year. Some areas may not apply to you.
    • Award(s) received in your education (e.g. honour roll recognition, prizes)
    • School leadership activities, club and/ or organization involvement and areas of volunteer involvement (e.g. drama club, yearbook committee, etc.)
    • Church leadership activities or areas of church involvement
    • School leadership activities and/or other volunteer involvement
    • In sports, list any individual awards/recognition, and/or team successes
    • In music, instruments played, including voice, and music related involvement such as band, choirs, orchestra, musicals
    • Abilities and interests (such as hobbies, passions)
    • Any paid work experience
    • Camp involvement
  2. Submit a 1,000-word essay (roughly four pages, double spaced). All three questions must be answered. Include examples and cite at least three sources to support your thinking.
    • What are two or three characteristics every leader should possess?
    • What are the biggest challenges facing leaders today?
    • As you develop as a leader, what values do you hope to demonstrate in today's society? How does your faith affect those values? What role will CMU have in your leadership journey?
  3. Request two nomination forms to be submitted on your behalf. The nomination forms will be automatically sent to your selected norminators at the time of form completion.
