Reflections on Social Justice Fair 2014

On Wednesday, February 5th, 2014 Menno Simons College hosted the 8th Annual Social Justice Fair in Riddell Hall at the University of Winnipeg. Coordinated by Jocelyn Hummelt, a 2014 graduate of Conflict Resolution Studies, the Fair brought together representatives from a variety of local organizations to increase awareness of social justice issues and showcase the ongoing efforts towards peace and justice that are prevalent in and around our province.

Leaders of Myanmar’s political parties, non-government organizations, and civil society organizations came together last December in Yangon for the first time to discuss how peacebuilding and conflict resolution can support the country’s ongoing democratization process.
Over 80 participants attended the weeklong “Seminar and Workshop on Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding,” facilitated by Drs. Anna Snyder and Stephanie Stobbe, professors of Conflict Resolution Studies at Menno Simons College. The event was organized by Zaceu Lian, a University of Winnipeg Alumnus and Director of the Council for Democracy in Burma, and sponsored by the DeFehr Foundation.

A new peace curriculum designed by Voice of Women for Peace Manitoba, aims to transform and enhance young women’s knowledge, skills, and attitudes around peace building and conflict resolution.
The curriculum, “Women, Peace & Activism: A Toolkit for Young Feminists to Build a Culture of Peace,” was written by Janna Barkman and Jazmin Papadopoulos, both of whom have studied at Menno Simons College (MSC).

In 2014, Ruth Taronno, MSC's Director of Practicum, travelled to Ghana to explore potential practicum opportunities for conflict resolution and international development students. As a result of the trip, practicum opportunities are available for students at the organizations listed below.

A two-week trip to Ghana resulted in five new practicum opportunities for conflict resolution and international development students at Menno Simons College (MSC).
Ruth Taronno, MSC’s Director of Practicum and Alumni Relations, travelled to Ghana in late April to develop relationships and investigate possible practicum placements with 10 organizations.
