Historians at Work: How Not to Bury Your Husband

This course focuses on the work of one or two historians, offering a deeper look at what historians do and what history is. It looks at issues like how those historians' interests and methods shaped their work, how their interests evolved, how they contributed to (or created) their field, and how their work has been used by others. Alternatively, this course may feature a debate in history and look at two or three historians who take different positions in that debate.

We will take a careful look at Burying S. M. (1992), the acclaimed product of a collaboration between David Cohen and E. S. Atieno Odhiambo. It chronicles legal battles over the burial of lawyer S. M. Otieno that transfixed Kenya in 1987. This slim micro-history opens up questions of urban modernity and attachment to ancestral land, of the lingering power of patriarchy and ethnicity, and of the role the state plays in all of these. Cohen and Odhiambo show how combining an outsider and an insider view, and how combining history with anthropology and sociology can reveal much about the past in a country struggling with a legacy of settler colonialism.

This is a land-based reconciliation course that will include a 3-day field school where CSOP participants will participate in a learning circle at the Sandy Saulteaux Spiritual Centre (SSSC). Sandy-Saulteaux Spiritual Centre's beautiful and peaceful retreat grounds by the Brokenhead River just east of Beausejour, MB is the ideal setting for Indigenous ceremony and perspective on peacebuilding in relative and treaty making efforts. The field school component of this course is grounded in the idea that working toward settler-Indigenous reconciliation requires learning and building face-to-face relationships that honour Indigenous knowledge, including connections to the land. There will be opportunities for dialogue and discussion on topics such as the legacy of colonization and pathways toward enacting forms of land-based reconciliation while collaborating to promote peace and regional resilience. In the years 413-426 CE, Augustine wrote The City of God, a massive, sprawling, majestic work that engages extensively with Roman and Jewish history, Greek and Roman mythology and philosophy, and Jewish, Roman, and Christian worship. Augustine wrote The City of God as a response to those who blamed Christians for the fall of Rome, but its deeper concern is with this question: where can the soul and the city find happiness amidst the changing circumstances of life? PSYC-3010 The Neuroscience of Social Behavior: (3.0 credit hours) We explore the neural processes underlying important aspects of our social behavior. In seminar format, we will consider topics central to social psychology, reviewing landmark contributions from social neuroscience, and some of the cutting-edge findings in this burgeoning field of study. Topics include neuroscience perspectives on person perception, the need to belong, mortality salience, social pain, intergroup relations, anger and aggression, and more. Prerequisite: 12 credit hours in Psychology.

PSYC-3600/SWRK-3600 Trauma and Resilience: (3.0 credit hours) In this course, we explore varieties of psychological trauma, along with the history and current theories in the field (e.g., cognitive, neurobiological, clinical, and socio-cultural perspectives). Topics may include: the nature of trauma (via sexual abuse, combat, and natural disasters), how trauma affects individuals and systems, grief reactions, and traumatic stress. We may also consider responses to trauma, resilience, vicarious traumatization, disenfranchised grief, crisis intervention, comorbid disorders and general treatments. Prerequisite: 12 credit hours in Psychology.

There are many points of agreement and of conflict. This course represents a re-consideration of various psychological theories and well-known research findings from Christian perspectives. PSYC/PCTS-4010 Senior Seminar Identity and Intersectionality (3.0 credit hours) This course critically examines the complex and diverse ways intersectionality is used as an interpretive framework across disciplines to examine identity. We will explore how intersectionality can be understood as a paradigm, theory, concept, practice, and methodology to study identity. This course will consider how gender, sex, culture, faith and religion, class, ability, and political realities are factors in identity, and we will examine how identity and intersectionality connect to histories of violence and oppression, as well as to human survival, persistence, and resistance. Prerequisite: 60 credit hours of university-level studies, including 12 credit hours in Psychology or Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies.

RLGN-1710 Religious Traditions of the World II: (3.0 credit hours) A survey of living religions from African indigenous communities, and those originating in the ancient Near East, including Judaism, Islam and Christianity (especially in its non-Western forms) in terms of their development, ideas, and diverse practices and expressions. Includes reflection on the strengths and limitations which these religious traditions offer towards meeting challenging issues within local and global communities.
