Job Purpose

The Assiniboine Castle Reception desk provides customer service to people with general inquiries in person, over the phone, and through email. Additionally, this is the primary location where mail is received and distributed. The Castle Reception Assistant covers various shifts at the desk to ensure that all inquiries are responded to in a timely manner.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Respond to calls that come to the main CMU phone line, providing answers or transferring the call to the appropriate person
• Respond to voicemails in a timely manner
• Assist those who come with questions to the reception desk, including giving directions, handing out waivers, using the copy machine, and releasing items for pickup
• Deal with emails that come to the CMU info email account, replying, forwarding, or deleting as necessary
• Receive mail deliveries from couriers and ensure that mail reaches its final destination
• Sort inter-departmental mail for mailboxes on North
• Prepare outgoing mail and parcels for pickup
• Receive and record payments for personal postage and personal print jobs
• Serve as a contact point should an emergency arise in the Assiniboine Castle, responding according to emergency protocols

• General assistance to the Director.

Grad Studies Assistant

Job Purpose

As CMU’s graduate programs grow, we want to continue to build connections among our graduate student community and to ensure that students are well-supported as they begin their studies and move through their academic journey at CMU. The Grad Student Assistant’s work in connecting with students, supporting grad student community life and assisting with administrative tasks is key to meeting these goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Connect with Graduate Students
  • The Assistant will connect with incoming students in the as they prepare to being their studies, answering logistical questions, providing a student perspective, and directing the student to CMU staff and faculty for support and information as appropriate.
  • As International Grad Students arrive in Canada, the Assistant will check in with them and, as needed, will arrange to meet with them to help them with logistics related to settling in (initial shopping, SIN, bank account, etc.)
  • From time to time, the Assistant may be asked to connect with current students (email, coffee...) when the student is struggling and would benefit from support and connection with another student.
• Coordinate Grad student social events
  • The Assistant will work with the Graduate Student Council to plan and promote regular social events for graduate students, in coordination with the Associate Registrar for Graduate Studies. The Assistant will be responsible to help to set-up for in-person events and to help clean up after in-person social events.
  • The Assistant will promote grad student events through posters, and the Grad Student group in Populi.
  • As opportunity permits, the Assistant will encourage participants from all grad programs to attend social events and to use the Grad Studies Lounge.
• Support the work of the Graduate Student Council
  • The Assistant will attend Graduate Student Council meetings and will support the Council in carrying out activities and other plans.
• Maintain the Grad Studies Room
  • The Assistant will check the grad studies room at least weekly and will tidy up, as needed. This includes checking the fridge and discarding any spoiled food.

Media Lab Assistant

Job Purpose

The presence of media studios and recording field equipment at CMU represents many exciting opportunities for Communications and Media students. These production spaces are intended to support many parts of the CMU community and requires ongoing administrative and maintenance support. The Comm/Media Assistant position provides an excellent skills development experience while at the same time providing the needed support to maintain and manage the studios and equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Field Equipment/Studios Orientation and Management

• The Assistant facilitates check-out/sign-in processes with library staff for all portable audio and video equipment and regularly checks the working condition of all equipment. The Assistant also checks equipment in the studios and flags any operational concerns or needs. The Assistant will participate in managing hardware and software in the studios and CMU computer labs in consultation with Comm/Media faculty and CMU’s IT department.
• A significant role in managing these resources is the delivery of orientation sessions at the beginning of each term. All students enrolled in a course that uses field equipment and/or media studios are required to attend a 30-minute orientation that explains usage responsibilities and procedures.

Studios Scheduling

• Projects from various courses and departments will be requiring time in the media studios. These activities may involve students, student volunteers, sessional instructors, and regular faculty and staff. The Assistant will serve as the contact person for studio scheduling and will prioritize usage in consultation with Communications/Media faculty. The Assistant will provide administrative support to set up student accounts on studio computers as needed.

Guidelines and Policy Development

• The Assistant participates in formulating strategy, guidelines and policy for field equipment and media studio use. This is important work that helps to build an appropriate infrastructure for program delivery.

Peer Mentoring

• The Assistant will be available to students working on projects as a peer mentor for up to 2 hours/week. An appointment system will be established through which students can sign-up for assistance. Peer mentoring is offered on the basis of the Assistant’s skills and experience.

Production Assistance

• The Assistant may be asked to assist in various creative production projects on behalf of CMU as time permits and as needs arise. Decisions about production involvement will be made on a case by case basis for faculty and staff-approved CMU projects.

  • Engage prospective students during campus visit events, such as greeting and mingling with guests, directing attendees to locations, engaging guests in conversation, sharing the story of CMU through the experience of being a current student. 

  • Provide support to Admissions Counsellors by assisting with prospective student and applicant follow up through email, text, and/or phone. 

  • Provide campus tours to prospective students and their families.

The Athletics Admissions Host should be comfortable working with money and ensure that a detailed record of monies in and the number of spectators is recorded.

The Event Assistants (2) work to set up the venue at the Loewen Athletic Centre for game day competitions. Generally, these duties take place on Friday or Saturday in the late morning or early afternoon, as per gym schedule, start time and availability.

Working together, the Event Assistants ensure that the full venue is set up and equipment is in good, working order for the competition. An average set up will take 1 ½ hours. This includes:

• Scorer’s table
• Bleachers and team benches

Basketball Lead Videographer

Duties and Responsibilities

As part of the CMU Athletic Communications team, the Athletics Videographer plays a key role in delivery of the home event to viewers at home. Working with modern equipment and programs, the Athletics Videographer ensures access, set up and operations of video equipment is prepared in a timely manner to maintain consistency of video delivery of the game day experience.

This may include reserving, picking up and returning of video equipment from library, creating video links for event access, preparing power access, web access, prior to event time and staying up to date on modern livestreaming equipment.

Reporting to the Athletics Sports Information and Communications Coordinator, the Athletics Videographer will ensure that video links are shared in a timely manner for consistent public access.

As part of the game day minor officials team, the Basketball Shot Clock Operator is responsible for operating the shot clock during the game. Each team has an allotted number of seconds in each possession of the ball to attempt a shot that must contact the basketball hoop. The clock is reset after each shot, foul or change of possession.

At the conclusion of the event, the members of the Basketball game day team will assist in post-game clean up.

Fitness Room Cleaner

Job Purpose

The Student Cleaner plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of the university fitness room. This position exists to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all users by regularly cleaning and sanitizing equipment, floors, and surfaces. The Student Cleaner is responsible for upholding high standards of cleanliness to enhance the overall experience of fitness room users.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Sanitize and thoroughly wipe down all fitness equipment
• Clean up equipment and ensure it is properly stored
• Sweep and/or vacuum floor, wet mop to maintain cleanliness
• Remove garbage, replace garbage bag, and remove recycling
• Clean mirrors and other surfaces
• Refill paper towel and cleaning solution spray bottles.
• Honest and accurate in reporting hours worked.
• Coordinate flexible shift schedules with supervisor, ensuring cleaning duties are completed each shift (2x per week for 2 hours each session)
  • The shift schedule is flexible but should be discussed with the supervisor to ensure adherence to cleaning expectations is met
• Meetings will be scheduled with your supervisor in January. These meetings must be attended to retain employment.

Working Conditions

This position is based in the fitness room within the Loewen Athletic Centre. The role includes handling cleaning chemicals and meeting the physical demands of the job. The schedule offers flexibility, with tasks scheduled twice weekly for two hours each, coordinated with your supervisor. The role involves minimal direct supervision during work hours.

Physical Requirements 

This is a physically demanding role that requires lifting fitness equipment for room maintenance. Responsibilities also include, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and other cleaning activities requiring physical exertion. The successful applicant must adhere to safety protocols to prevent injuries and strain. 

Other Information

Prior to beginning work, the successful applicant will receive safety training as well as specific training for the position. Training is paid and is mandatory, failure to complete training will result in forfeiting position.

Public Address Announcer

Duties and Responsibilities

As part of the game day team, the Public Address Announcer plays a key role in guiding the ongoings of a home Athletics event. Following a pre-written script, the PA Announcer welcomes the audience, delivers the names of the athletes in the starting lineups, notes important data in-match, including scorers, fouls, etc; particular to the sport.

The PA Announcer also plays a critical role in the entertainment of the event, carefully selecting appropriate songs during stoppages in the action (timeouts or game breaks) from a pre-selected event playlists.

At the conclusion of the event, the members of the game day team will assist in post game clean up.

This position may fit well for a student studying Communications and Media at CMU or fit a person with a general interest in sports.

As part of the game day team, the Soccer Scorekeeper is responsible for operating the digital scoreboard and score clock for CMU home soccer games at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex on Waverley Street. Along with operating the scoreboard, the Soccer Scorekeeper will collect basic statistical information and data from the match.

At the conclusion of the event, the members of the game day team will assist in post-game clean up.

As part of the CMU Athletic Communications team, the Athletics Video Camera Operator plays a key role in delivery of the home event to viewers at home. Working with modern equipment and programs, the Video Camera Operator works with the Lead Videographer to produce a consistent, high-quality livestream broadcast of all home athletics events.

The Video Camera Operator may be asked to assist in reserving, picking up and returning of video equipment from the CMU library, create video links for event access, preparing power access and web access prior to event times.

Reporting to the Athletics Sports Information and Communications Coordinator, the Video Camera Operator will contribute to the CMU Athletics Communications team and be a key behind-the-scenes mediator in a spectators “at-home” CMU Blazers experience.

Essentially, each Court Assistant is positioned on opposite sides of the court, away from any chance of interfering with play. The court assistance work together to ensure that at the conclusion of every point, the next server is provided with a new ball promptly and the ball used on the previous point is collected.

At the conclusion of the event, the members of the Volleyball game day team will assist in post-game clean up.

Job Purpose

The Student Cleaner is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of the dining hall floor. This role is essential for ensuring that students, staff, faculty, and visitors have a welcoming and clean environment to share meals. The job is shared between two individuals, with each person working 3 times per week for 2 hours per shift.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Stack all chairs on top of tables
• Thoroughly sweep the floor, including underneath tables
• Use the floor scrubber to mop the floor.
• Wet mop the floor underneath tables.
• Work schedule is 6:30pm to 8:30pm, Monday to Friday.
• Maintain all cleaning equipment and notify supervisor of any issues.
• Both cleaners work together on Monday from 6:30pm- 8:30pm.
• On the days other than Monday, shifts are alternated between the two cleaners.  
• Scheduling should be coordinated between the two cleaners in consultation with the supervisor.
• On Monday, all tables and chairs should be stacked and moved the side to thoroughly sweep, wash, and polish the floor. After cleaning, reset the tables and chairs.

Cross-Campus Courier

Job Purpose

To ensure delivery of mail across campus twice daily Monday-Friday.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Deliver mail across campus twice a day, 9:30 AM & 2:30 PM, Monday – Friday (times are flexible with a qualified candidate)
  • Pick up cross-campus mail at South Hall Reception, take to Assiniboine Castle Reception.
  • Bring mail from Assiniboine Castle Reception to South Hall Reception.
  • mail from North side Reception to South side Reception
• Once the mail is picked up the responsibility is to sort the mail into staff mailboxes and residence mailboxes.
• This job also includes emailing anyone who receives mail but does not have a mailbox.
• The position may also involve putting up posters as well as taking them down once the dates have passed.
• Other duties as assigned to assist the Student Life Programs.

Parking Monitor
(Position Available)

Job purpose

To aid in parking enforcement through issuing violations to cars without parking passes.

Duties and responsibilities

• Check parking lots by typing or scanning license plate numbers
• Check visitor parking sign in and make note of license plates
• Use handheld tablet and ticket printer to check parking and issue violations
• Issue “Final Warnings” to cars with three or more violations
• Keep track of cars with “Final Warnings” and communicate them to the Student Life Program Assistant
• Call the Student Life Program Assistant when cars on “Final Warning” list are found

Working conditions

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Coordinator

Duties and Responsibilities

• Serving as a liaison between students, volunteers, and the CMU community.
• Find and coordinate volunteers for P.A.L sessions.
• Help to equip volunteers with skills and resources to help other students participating in P.A.L.
• Promotion and publicize P.A.L. activities
• Collaborate with the advising office and/or student groups to offer study skills workshops
• Collect data about P.A.L – attendance, recurring courses or skills students students need, individual student concerns ,etc. 
• Participate in visioning and planning for the future of P.A.L

• Do basic mechanical work – from tuning up brakes and shifters, to fixing/overhauling headsets and bottom brackets
• Maintain and organize a public workspace
• Build bikes from parts and sell the finished bikes to people
• Assist in hosting events to promote cycling in the CMU community
• Assist in planning/leading/hosting workshops to offer opportunities for others to build their skills

Senior International Assistant

Job Purpose

This position provides workshop development, administrative and leadership support, and personal supports for international students at CMU. Duties can include but are not limited to planning and leading weekly workshops, contacting and facilitating staff and faculty workshop guests, communication to and from students including pre-arrival, and providing administrative support for events.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Facilitate regular international student gatherings and events
• Plan events together with the Coordinator of International Admissions and Programming
• Support ISA as needed.
• Collaborate with other students during the wellness program
• Seek out and collect resources relevant to cross-cultural understanding and making meaningful connections and relationships.
• Organize events relevant to CMU and international students' needs
• Research on other university websites and reach out to other international students to learn more about events and programs they run.

Student Community Life Assistant
(Position Available)

Job Purpose

The Community Life Assistant provides leadership and assistance to a breadth of Community Life programs throughout the year.  Most prominently, this position works closely with the Orientation/New Student Programs ensuring that all new students have a smooth transition to CMU and are adequately resourced throughout their first year.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Monitor and stock supplies in Commuter Student Lounges and advocate for the needs of commuter students
• Collaborate with Student Council on how best to serve Commuter Students, including organizing a minimum of one event each semester
• Provide mentorship and guidance to Student Navigators in collaboration with Director of Student Community Life.
• Meet weekly with supervisor to ensure goals and tasks are clear and well communicated
• Work collaboratively with the Senior Residence Assistant to plan student-wide events (including Wellness Week)
• Research, develop, and implement resources to expand community life programming on campus—including but not limited to Commuters, New Students, Transfer students, etc
• Assist in finalizing and facilitating Orientation events (September and January)
• Help organize and facilitate various events during Orientation, including directing and assisting other student leaders as required
• Must be able to begin mid-late August. Specific start date to be determined

• Registered in at least 9 credit hours each semester.
• Live off campus and be involved in various parts of the CMU learning community.
