New International Student Orientation

International Student Orientation begins on August 31, 2023 (fall start)

Orientation is mandatory for new international students. We require that when you book your flights, you plan to arrive by the dates above. Please do not book your flight before you pay your deposit. Once your flight is booked, please confirm the dates and times with CMU.

CMU recognizes that the transition to Canada and to post-secondary education can be challenging for new international students. The following areas will be covered during the orientation sessions:

  • Canadian Cultural/Social Norms (including human rights, sexual harassment, relationship expectations, social cues)
  • Transition Issues (normalizing homesickness, culture shock, mental health and well-being, food)

Examples of sessions offered:

  • Academics at CMU (academic integrity, critical thinking, library orientation, PAL, tutoring); course registration and other institutional paperwork
  • Health care in Canada
  • Finances (financial aid, setting up payment plans, understanding income tax)
  • Employment (on-campus employment program and applications, understanding Canadian workplace culture)
  • Introduction to Winnipeg – Winnipeg Transit and shopping (set-up cell phone plans, pick up bedding, toiletries)
  • Outings to Assiniboine Park and The Forks
