Estamos Guatemala Reference Form

CMU’s Estamos is an intercultural, study abroad program. It offers students options including a semester-long (12 week) experience of living, learning, and working in Guatemala or shorter (2-3 week) study abroad courses to other countries around the world. These reference forms are only required for students applying to the Estamos Guatemala program.

Estamos Guatemala participants will travel and occasionally share living space with each other, while engaging with a diverse range of people. An immersive program such as Estamos is richly rewarding but will also be intense and demanding in nature. A student’s ability to be flexible, cooperative, curious, and self-motivated will contribute to a meaningful and beneficial semester of learning, growth, and exploration. Your insight into the preparedness of this applicant to participate in such a program is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your willingness to provide this reference.

Estamos can be an intense experience, both physically and mentally/emotionally. Its busy schedule, adventurous activities, moving locations, travelling in a group, and engaging with issues of poverty, justice, and culture all lead to an intensity that students will deal with. Therefore, it's important to for us to evaluate an applicant's fit for the program based on health.
Do you have any concerns about this applicant's emotional, physical, and/or mental health to live in such a unique and dynamic environment? Please comment. If there are any concerns, do you feel that the applicant is stable enough to cope with the intensity of the program?
It is possible that a student may be sent home for reasons of attitude or behaviour. We have no desire to do this, which is why it is helpful to interview students with previous incidents of behavioural struggles so that they truly understand what they are signing up for.
Is there a history of difficult or inappropriate behaviour with this applicant? If so, what would be your recommendations?
Is there anything special we can do for this applicant? Or anything else that would be helpful for us to know?
