In pursuit of human rights

A desire to correct injustices led MSC alumna Heather Unger (MSC '03, IDS 4–year) to pursue a career in human rights.
Since 2010, Unger has worked at the Manitoba Human Rights Commission (MHRC). Until November 2014 she held the position of Human Rights Investigator. In that role, Unger investigated complaints of discrimination and determined which cases should be recommended for mediation or adjudication. Based on the evidence that human rights investigators gather, a board of commissioners decides whether a complaint should be dismissed or sent to a mediation or adjudication process.

Two Menno Simons College (MSC) students and four Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) students each received $1000 bursaries from Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Manitoba this year.
MSC students Dylan Cohen (Conflict Resolution Studies) and Sarah Cullihall (International Development Studies) and CMU students Anna Bigland-Pritchard (Music), Maya Janzen (Social Sciences), Alyssa Lord (Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies), and Clare Schellenberg (Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies, Biblical and Theological Studies) each received a student award.

MSC alumna Nadia Mahmood (MSC '03, IDS 3–year) has been awarded a fully funded Rotary Peace Fellowship to pursue a Master of International Relations–Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Queensland, Australia.
The internationally competitive fellowship is awarded annually to individuals who are committed to the advancement of peace. Aimed at potential world and community leaders, the master’s degree at the University of Queensland is designed to equip students to have a practical effect on addressing international and regional conflicts.

Dr. Kirit Patel is passionate about food security.
"Farmers should be able to produce food in a sustainable manner, and they should have control on the production," says Patel, Assistant Professor of International Development Studies at MSC, a college of Canadian Mennonite University.
