Post-Doctoral Researcher in Climate Change Adaptation and Biodiversity Monitoring
This post-doc is a two-year grant-funded term position monitoring outcomes of nature-based solutions to climate change in rural Zimbabwe. While the post-doctoral researcher is directly responsible to the Principal Investigator (PI), the person will work with an interdisciplinary research team in Canada and Zimbabwe. The project, Locally-led Indigenous Nature Based Solution for Climate Change Adaptation in Zimbabwe (LINC-Z), is funded through Global Affairs Canada and in partnership with Mennonite Central Committee.
As an integral member of the research team, the post-doc will apply spatial analysis to monitor landscape-scale outcomes of nature-based solutions/interventions for restoring forest, wetland, and degraded agricultural lands and protecting/enhancing biodiversity in rural communities in Zimbabwe. The post-doc will also work with the PI to develop community ecosystem monitoring programs or apps and work with a research coordinator to disseminate knowledge through an innovative learning hub.
This position is ideal for early career scholars seeking to gain collaborative research experience with an emphasis on creating data for publication and for the public.
Responsibilities
- Monitor landscape-scale outcomes of interventions in rural Zimbabwe
- Collaborate with international partners; conduct fieldwork in Zimbabwe for approximately 60 days in a two-year period
- Oversee broad data collection of interdisciplinary collaboration
- Supervise (mentor and assist) LINC-Z undergraduate and/or graduate research assistants
- Liaise with the PI and co-investigators on interdisciplinary research team including scholars of International Development Studies, Peace and Conflict Transformation, Psychology and Political Studies
- Engage in training and professional development opportunities as required by Principal Investigator and/or the LINC-Z team
- Participate in the analysis of quantitative data and dissemination of results through CMU’s international learning hub and academic forums (conferences, journal articles, books)
Qualifications
- A commitment to the Christian faith, the church, and the mission of CMU
- PhD in ecology, natural resource management, or related discipline
- Record of peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals
- Experience in spatial analysis using remote sensing or drone photographic images
- Interest and curiosity in interdisciplinary research
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively across cultures and with diverse stakeholders
- Track record of communication of research to a wide range of stakeholders
- Ability to work independently in a scientific setting
- Proven record of working with team members to help build their research skills and knowledge and to support and guide their professional development
- Experience with/awareness of interdisciplinary applied research and mixed methods
- Experience conducting research or working outside of Canada, preferred
- Understanding of international development paradigms and practices, preferred
- Experience collecting biodiversity data in terrestrial and/or aquatic environments, experience working with DNA sequencing data for biodiversity measurements, using mixed methods in an interdisciplinary project, preferred.
- Experience working in Africa/Zimbabwe, preferred
