Gifts of Securities

Securities are one of the most tax-efficient ways to support the causes you are passionate about.

Gifting securities like stocks, bonds, or mutual funds to CMU can be as easy as gifting cash and can reduce your bill during tax season.

When you donate publicly listed securities directly to CMU, you receive an immediate tax receipt for the fair market value of your shares.

CMU pays zero tax on the sale of donated shares, so you can be sure that CMU is receiving the full support of your donation. Your receipt is based on the market value price of the shares on the date of transfer.

What is a publicly traded security?

Stocks, bonds, or mutual fund units that are bought and sold freely on the public market.

How does it work?

Listed securities are not subject to capital gains tax when they are donated to CMU without being sold first.

The value of the donation receipt will be the closing market price of the security on the date it is received by CMU. The university does not pay tax on the sale of securities.

Please complete our Letter of Direction and submit a copy to CMU as well as your broker to begin the process.
