Why Study Education at CMU?
Understanding people and systems
Education isn't neutral—it shapes and is shaped by history, society, culture, and power. You will learn to question your assumptions and critically analyze curriculum so that you can identify whose voices are missing and create meaningful learning experiences for all students.
Develop as a whole person
Centering your own development as a whole person brings together our vision for education at CMU and Indigenous ways of knowing and doing. As a future educator, it's your responsibility to create opportunities for students to learn, develop, and belong, and here you'll experience that kind of environment for yourself.
Shaped by Indigenous ways of teaching and learning
In Canada, it is essential that we understand the ongoing impact of residential schools on Indigenous people and develop respect and appreciation for Indigenous ways of knowing and teaching. Indigenous understandings are intentionally integrated throughout the entire curriculum.
Foundation of peace, justice, and reconciliation
Peace and justice are at the centre of what we do at CMU. In education, this looks like applying a restorative justice lens to how you navigate relationships inside and outside the classroom and build an inclusive community where everyone can belong.
Education happens in community
Teaching is a team sport! You will learn from different people, like educational assistants, speech pathologists, and occupational therapists about how they partner with teachers in student learning and development. Community immersion experiences will reinforce the understanding that important teaching and learning happens outside the classroom, too.
