Research Projects with Human Participants

The following steps outline the process for submitting a human ethics application at CMU.

  1. Complete the Tri-Council Tutorial on Research Ethics (TCPS2: CORE-2022) if you have not completed this in the past. Your certificate of completion is necessary in the ethics submission process.
  2. Review the CMU Guidelines for Ethics Submissions and Reviews
  3. Complete the checklist for New Studies at CMU
  4. Feel free to use the Sample Consent Form for research where consent is required
  5. The main ethics submission form is completed electronically and will be submitted through the CMU website. Click for the form: CMU Research Ethics New Study Submission Form.

Other materials must be submitted by email at this time (e.g., TCPS2: CORE-2022 certificate, interview guides, surveys, consent form recruitment materials). Please submit these documents to reb-submissions:@:cmu.ca.

General inquiries should be directed to the REB Chair, Heather Campbell-Enns (HCampbell-Enns:@:cmu.ca).

Course-Based Research Projects with Human Participants

Course-based research is instructor-led research that is part of course requirements.

Course-based research projects need REB approval at the course level (i.e., not the individual student level). The instructor applies for REB approval for the activity (e.g. assignment) and guides the individual or group research activities in the course. Individual students do not apply for REB approval unless they expect to extend their research outside the course (e.g. thesis project).

This ethics submission form is completed electronically and will be submitted through the CMU website. Click for the form: Course-Based Research Projects with Human Participants.

Any inquiries for course-based research projects should be directed to the REB Chair, Heather Campbell-Enns (HCampbell-Enns:@:cmu.ca).
